The Environmental Protection Agency is an independent government program that manages environmental health risks, sponsors and conducts research, and develops and enforces environmental regulations.
The EPA began under an executive order from President Nixon in 1970 in response to growing calls for environmental regulation. The EPA enforcement powers include fines, sanctions, and other measures.
