Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a comprehensive, evidence-based psychotherapy that combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with concepts of mindfulness, acceptance, and emotion regulation. It was originally developed to treat borderline personality disorder but has since been adapted for various mental health conditions such as mood disorders, suicidal ideation, self-harm behaviors, substance use disorders, and eating disorders. Key aspects of DBT can include: balancing acceptance and change strategies; teaching specific skills in four main areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness; and, utilizing individual therapy, group skills training, and phone coaching.
