Cluster investigation

  • Environmental Health

A cluster investigation is a review of an anomalous number of real or perceived health events. An example of this is Cancer Alley, the stretch of land along the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans where many cases of cancer have occurred. These clusters can be grouped together by time, proximity, location and other factors. Cluster investigations are designed to confirm case reports, determine whether they represent an unusual disease occurrence, and explore possible causes and contributing environmental factors.
