The assault weapons ban prohibits manufacturing, transferring and possessing certain semiautomatic firearms designated as assault weapons and “large capacity” ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. Formally known as the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, the ban was a subsection of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. The law also bans the manufacturing of “copy-cat” models of military-style firearms and firearms with specific combat features.
