At this third National Academy of Sciences colloquium on the science of science communication, researchers, policymakers, science journalists, and others will explore evidence-based strategies to engage the public with science.
Sessions include communicating with the public on energy, immigration, and infectious disease; examining media coverage of human genome editing and artificial intelligence and driverless cars; measuring communication impact through networks, big data, and social media; and exploring the role of scientists and the media in communicating uncertainty.
In addition, recipients of two research awards on building capacity for science communication will present their findings on evidence-based science communication for policymakers and new approaches to promoting vaccines.
The colloquium will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST on Thursday Nov. 16 – with a 6:15 p.m. keynote address from surgeon, public health researcher, and bestselling author and New Yorker staff writer Atul Gawande – and from 8:40 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. EST on Friday, Nov. 17, at the National Academy of Sciences building, 2101 Constitution Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C.
