The Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council will release "Weight Gain During Pregnancy: Reexamining the Guidelines," a report recommending updates to the guidelines for weight gain during pregnancy. The guidelines, designed to balance risks and benefits for mothers and infants, were last revised in 1990. The revision accommodates changes in the American population, notably the rise in the percentage of women who are overweight or obese.
