National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine holds a one-day workshop in Prattville, Alabama, on the “Challenges and Opportunities in Achieving Rural Health Equity.” Hosted by NAS’ Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity and the Elimination of Health Disparities and its Roundtable on Population Health Improvement, the event will include discussion of efforts aimed at tackling “systematic disinvestment in rural communities and implications for improving the social determinants of health, including access to and quality of health care services.” It also aims to show some “promising and constructive actions” that some rural communities are taking to improve their residents’ health and well-being, according to NAS. It will also address how economic issues, immigration and racial inequities affect health in rural  U.S. areas. The workshop will also be available via webcast.
