Gene drives represent a new take on genetic engineering that offers previously impossible means of fighting disease-spreading insects and invasive species but also raises the specter of ecological disruption. SciLine’s live, web-based video briefing will feature leading experts who can get you up to speed on the current status of gene-drive technology, applications under consideration, and related ethical, legal, and regulatory issues. The briefing will include an open Q&A for reporters. SciLine is funded by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

WHEN: April 25, 1:30-2:30 p.m. EDT

WHO:

  • Zach Adelman, associate professor of entomology, Texas A&M University

  • Anthony James, professor of microbiology and molecular genetics, University of California, Irvine

  • Jennifer Kuzma, professor of social sciences and co-director of the Genetic Engineering and Society Center, North Carolina State University

  • Renee Wegrzyn, Safe Genes program manager, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency

  • SciLine director Rick Weiss will moderate the briefing.

HOW:

The briefing is open only to members of the media.
