Live Webinar: Making Sense of the Census Uninsured Numbers

September 19, 2012 @ 1:00 am

WHEN: Wednesday, Sept. 19, 1:30–2:30 p.m. EDT

The Census Bureau just announced that the number of people without health insurance dropped from 50 million to 48.6 million in 2011, marking the first decrease since 2007. That information came from the Current Population Survey, but it isn’t the only data that Census is releasing on the uninsured.

Census is preparing a second report that it will announce Sept. 20 – based on the American Community Survey – that will offer a more local view of insurance coverage. It will go beyond state data to examine recent trends in cities, many counties, and in congressional districts. This survey is much larger, and can be used to examine sub-state data and smaller demographic subgroups.

How are various demographic groups faring when it comes to insurance coverage? Specific geographic areas? What are the trends moving forward?

Leading uninsured experts will answer these questions – and your questions – the day before Census releases its second set of numbers.

SPEAKERS:

Lynn Blewett, director, State Health Access Data Assistance Center, University of Minnesota

Peter Cunningham, senior fellow, Center for Studying Health System Change

Rachel Garfield, associate director, Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured
