CDC captures data from investigated outbreaks on agents, foods, and settings responsible for illness. The Foodborne Outbreak Online Database (FOOD) Tool is a public tool that allows for a basic look at outbreak data between 1998 and 2014. Users can sort by food/ingredients, year, pathogen, and outbreaks by state. The presenter will give a brief description of the surveillance system which collects this outbreak data and give a demonstration on how to use the FOOD Tool.

About the speaker
Ruthie Luna-Gierke is a foodborne diseases epidemiologist and the surveillance coordinator for National Outbreak Reporting System (NORS). She received a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree in public health from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. She joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2009 when she accepted a position as a surveillance epidemiologist within the Enteric Diseases Epidemiology Branch. She has authored and co-authored several manuscripts and her interests include Shiga toxin-producing E. coli and outbreaks of foodborne disease illnesses.
