Katy Butler, award-winning journalist and author of “Knocking on Heaven’s Door:  the Path to a Better Way of Death,” will be leading a discussion on June 19 at Loyola University School of Law, Power Rogers & Smith Ceremonial Courtroom, 25 East Pearson Street, Chicago.  Registration will open at 6 p.m. with the discussion running from 6:30–7:30 p.m., followed by a book signing and cocktail reception until 8:30 p.m.

“Knocking on Heaven’s Door” was named “One of Ten Best Memoirs of 2013” and “A Big Book for fall 2013” by Publishers Weekly. According to Abraham Verghese, professor and senior associate chairman for the theory and practice of medicine at Stanford University, and the author of the novel “Cutting for Stone,” shares that the book “is a thoroughly researched and compelling mix of personal narrative and hard-nosed reporting that captures just how flawed care at the end of life has become. My hope is that this book might goad the public into pressuring their elected representatives to further transform health care from its present crisis-driven, reimbursement-driven model to one that truly cares for the patient and the family. And since life is, after all, a fatal illness and none of us are spared, there is an urgent need for us in America to reclaim death from medicine and, whenever possible, enable the ritual of dying at home with family present (and aided by all medicine can offer) so that we are allowed to take our leave from earth with dignity.” promises to be an engaging discussion!

Tickets for the event are $10. Register for the event and get more details.
