National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS)

  • Firearm Violence

The CDC’s National Violent Death Reporting System, also called NVDRS, provides a national picture of violent deaths in the U.S.

The NVDRS is typically a reliable source for data on firearm deaths. (We’ve covered it before.) Several states have also replicated the dataset to offer figures for their states.

As of late July, 19 states have created and published their own violent death reporting systems. These are great resources for statewide reporting and, in some cases, for covering violent deaths at the county and city levels.

While NVDRS was still being maintained by the government as of July 2025, datasets like these are more crucial than ever as funding cuts at the CDC threaten the existence of federal data.

Here are the states with their own version of NVDRS so far and links to the dashboards. Indiana and Wisconsin are both aiming to have their own dashboards published this summer.
