Medicare Total Enrollment tables (updated Jan 2021) Information on all Medicare enrollees by geography, type of coverage, type of entitlement, and demographic characteristics from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Medicare Data Hub — The Commonwealth Fund created a detailed mini-site with timely facts, research and analysis on all things Medicare, just in time for the annual open enrollment period for existing beneficiaries (October 15-December 7, 2020). Plus, there’s charts. Lots of downloadable charts!

The Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey public use file (MCBS 2018 PUF) is a continuous, in-person, longitudinal survey of a representative national sample of the Medicare population. The MCBS 2018 PUF is prepared from data collected from 13,441 community-dwelling Medicare beneficiaries representing a population of 56 million. The PUF contains standard demographic variables, such as age categories, race/ethnicity, and sex, as well as information about health conditions, access to and satisfaction with care, type of insurance coverage, and health care utilization.

CMS has posted the annual release of the Geographic Variation Public Use File with data for 2007-2017. This series of downloadable tables and reports contains demographic, spending, utilization, and quality indicators for the Medicare fee-for-service population. It presents data at the state-level (including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands), hospital referral region (HRR)-level, and county-level.

Medicare Advantage/Part D Contract and Enrollment Data: (November 2018) Monthly update to the Medicare Advantage (MA) / Part D Contract and Enrollment Data section serves as a centralized repository for publicly available data on contracts and plans, enrollment numbers, service area data, and contact information for MA, Prescription Drug Plan (PDP), cost, PACE, and demonstration organizations.

Medicare Provider Utilization and Payment Data: 2015 Part D Prescriber: The Part D Prescriber Public Use File has information on prescription drugs prescribed by individual physicians and other health care providers and paid for under the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Program. Data can be analyzed many different ways, including location, specialty, drug name/generic, total claims, cost, drug count and more.

The Medicare Part D Opioid Prescribing Mapping Tool, updated in November 2017, is an interactive tool that shows geographic comparisons, at the state, county, and ZIP code levels, of de-identified Medicare Part D opioid prescription claims – prescriptions written and then submitted to be filled – within the United States. The mapping tool presents Medicare Part D opioid prescribing rates for 2015 as well as the change in opioid prescribing rates from 2013 to 2015. New for this release is additional information on extended-release opioid prescribing rates as well as spatial analyses to identify “hot spots” or clusters.

Utilization of products, services by Medicare beneficiaries

CMS has released a data set on Provider Utilization and Payment Data: Referring Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Supplies (DMEPOS) Public Use File. It contains information on products and services provided to Medicare beneficiaries ordered by physicians and other health care professionals.

Medicare hospital utilization and payment data

In June 2015, CMS released updated Medicare hospital utilization and payment data for both inpatient and outpatient billing and the physician and other supplier utilization and payment data. The Medicare hospital utilization and payment data consists of information for 2013 about the average amount a hospital bills for services that may be provided in an inpatient stay or outpatient visit. The hospital data includes payment and utilization information for services that may be provided in connection with the 100 most common Medicare inpatient stays and 30 selected outpatient procedures at over 3,000 hospitals in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care publishes extensive data about Medicare costs in various locations across the country.
