Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUPnet) is an online tool based on data from the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ).
Journalists can access various databases on hospital emergency department visits, readmissions, inpatient settings and community inpatient statistics on national and state levels.
Data is downloadable and can be refined by numerous variables, such as age, type, characteristics and outcomes. For example, a journalist can parse data on a number of emergency department visits among people 65-84 and 85+, percent of overall ED visits, admissions vs treat and release, or by diagnosis using ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes. Data can also be displayed in chart or graph form. The database includes statistics from 2006-2022.
