The Business of NJ’s For-Profit Hospitals

These stories look at the business practices of New Jersey’s for-profit hospitals. 1. “Bitter Fight Over Ailing Hospital” looks at why two for-profit companies are fighting to buy a money-losing, debt-ridden Catholic hospital in one of New Jersey’s poorest cities, how they propose to make money, what it means for taxpayers and the behind-the-scenes politicking that may determine the outcome. 2. “For Profits Cash in on Hospital Land” explores a new and completely unregulated method for-profit owners use to raise cash for hospitals — by selling the hospitals’ land and buildings and leasing them back. 3. “Hospital Owners Cashing In,” details the questionable financial practices of new owners of a Secaucus, NJ hospital.
