July 10, 2010.

3. Provide a brief synopsis of the story or stories, including any significant findings.

"Sleep Is a Battlefield" is an account of the latest research and findings in sleep science, from military and law-enforcement applications to news to help readers sleep better.

4. Explain types of documents, data or Internet resources used. Were FOI or public records act requests required? How did this affect the work?

I went online to locate the major players in the field. My homework included numerous articles in scientific journals, as well as books and a few newspaper accounts.

5. Explain types of human sources used.

I interviewed sleep scientists, many of whom appear in the story, and other sources including Randy Gardner, who set a record by staying awake for 11 days.

6. Results (if any).

The magazine received positive feedback about the story, and my sources liked the story, too, which is always desirable. My editor also swore he'd get more sleep.

7. Follow-up (if any). Have you run a correction or clarification on the report or has anyone come forward to challenge its accuracy? If so, please explain.

No corrections or clarifications.

8. Advice to other journalists planning a similar story or project.

Choose a topic that interests you but one that's important to readers. It's a bonus if you get to shoot rubber bullets at virtual bad guys.
