Making the Connection

This all-encompassing profile featured Jon Kingsdale, executive director of the Commonwealth Health Connector Authority, and his efforts to reform healthcare in Massachusetts. The article tackled many complex issues such as the role of the Connector, curbing prices, affordability, and reforming the non-group market, and boiled them down into a format that is not only understandable, but useful to the C-suite level executives that make up our audience. Americans generally have rejected universal coverage, which makes the Massachusetts effort both risky and potentially groundbreaking for the entire nation. The most significant finding was learning that healthcare reform’s ultimate sustainability depends on reining in the upward trend in medical costs. It was particularly challenging to pay attention to the series of enrollment deadlines the Connector instituted for individuals to purchase insurance. From my initial visit to Boston to talk to Kingsdale and going to press took about six months. As a result, the article was able to provide readers with up-to-the minute statistics and arguments that will help them formulate opinions of their own about not only how Massachusetts is progressing, but also how they may be able to contribute to reforming the system in their own states and across the country.
