Physicians Practice and athenahealth, a company that handles billing processes for thousands of physicians around the country, put together a first-of-its-kind indexto rank payers, nationally and regionally, on how well they work with physicians.
There has never been a way for physicians to gauge the performance of payers in meaningful terms.
The index, called PayerView, uses athenahealth’s aggregate data on thousands of billing transactions as the basis for ranking payers on how efficiently they reimburse physicians for their services.

Written by Pamela Moore, it investigated the practices of insurance companies and how well they pay physicians for services. It was a groundbreaking effort that gave doctors new and vital information to help them determine which insurance companies paid on time and treated providers best, information they could use in their fight to survive in this changing medical marketplace.
