Multimedia Journalism Panel Handout from Health Journalism 2016

Tips

  • Start where you are.

  • Nothing really takes the place of a good camera in the long run.

  • Connect with the person you are interviewing.

  • Listen and ask the question that they really want to answer.

  • Beautiful video is nothing without great audio. Invest in an external mic and a digital recorder.

  • Know your equipment like the back of your hand.

  • It takes a long time to do even a short piece, when you include editing.

  • Ask questions upfront about your fee for shooting video. It is too late after.

  • Your video should not be the exact same story as your print version, if you are doing multimedia. The whole point is to be able to tell a multilevel story. Take time to ask yourself “will this story be better by adding video or audio or both?”
