Yurina Melara Valiulis, La Opinion, Los Angeles:
What brought you to the AHCJ conference?
I am here thanks to AHCJ Ethnic Media Health Journalism Fellowship. This is my first time and I’m really glad I was able to come. I’ve met other reporters like me who have my same interest and share my passion for news and health care issues. I don’t know if I’ll be able to come back, but I would definitely love to.
Which has been one of your favorite panels … and why?
Actually I have enjoyed two panels. I liked the one on global health and local audience and the one on health care cost. I like other panels, but those two are my favorite because I’ve done stories on pandemics like H1N1 and I’ve been working on stories on how to control medical cost.
What are you taking from the conference?
If I had to choose just one thing I would say that there are different perspectives and when it comes to health care even the experts agree to disagree.
Are you planning any sightseeing while in Boston?
Yes, maybe I’ll have time on Sunday afternoon. The panels are supposed to finish around 2 p.m. and my flight leaves at 7:45 p.m., so I’ll have time to go to the Freedom Trail, and who knows, maybe even the USS Constitution.
