At Health Journalism 2009, Kris Sparks (director, Office of Rural Health, Washington State Department of Health; board member, National Rural Health Association) discussed "Health Professional Shortage Areas: A good thing?" as part of the "Identifying and addressing medically underserved areas" panel. Sparks defined Health Professional Shortage Areas, listed a few common ones and discussed the benefits of this official government designation.
