David Henry: Novelty, treatment options, evidence, reliance on media release

David Henry (chief executive officer, Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences, Toronto, Canada) came to Health Journalism 2009's "Statistics, conclusions, limitations: Reporting on medical studies" panel to deliver a presentation titled "Novelty, treatment options, evidence, reliance on media release." In it, he critiques a number of articles representatives of problems endemic to health care journalism. Henry urges reporters to dig deeper on stories and not just provide pharmaceutical companies with free advertising based on press releases and glowing study reports, and to put treatments into context based on their novelty, available supporting evidence and an examination of alternative treatment options.
