AHCJ is planning a London event on Jan. 10 at the Bloomberg News offices. Andrew Dillon, the chief executive of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, will speak and take questions from the press. NICE advises the United Kingdom's National Health Service on the cost-effectiveness of medical treatments.
In this role, he is at the center of a storm over how his young agency reaches its decisions, and indirectly, how the NHS spends its 12 billion pound ($24 billion) annual drug budget. At least one pharmaceutical company has sued the agency, and patients have likewise gone to court to force the government to pay for medicines that NICE has deemed not worth the price. Other companies have responded by proposing discounts or money-back guarantees.
Kristen Hallam, a Bloomberg editor and member of AHCJ's board of directors, hopes the news event will help draw interest in establishing a London chapter of AHCJ.
