The Data Query System from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics is a new data visualization tool that can show estimates and trends on more than 120 public health topics, including death rates, disabilities, nutrition, health insurance and obesity. Users can filter results for single or multi-year periods.
Deeper dive
Users can customize a DQS search for data on health topics by selecting demographic, geographic and socioeconomic categories, including race, age, sex, income, education and geography. This makes it easier to visualize disparity data, which can be downloaded in map, table and chart formats.
Journalists can use DQS to track progress of public health issues, analyze trends and pinpoint specific groups, locations or socioeconomic factors. This tool can better inform reporting on health topics such as asthma prevalence in minority neighborhoods, cancer, health care access and quality, death rates, insurance status and obesity, among others.
Data sources include the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, National Health Interview Survey, and National Vital Statistics System. New data sources will be added to DQS in future updates.
