Third-party administrator

A third-party administrator (TPA) is an organization that pays claims for a self-insured (or self-funded) employer or other purchaser, but does not assume any direct financial risk related to the cost of those claims. The TPA pays the claims and then the self-insured employer pays the TPA for the actual cost of the claims plus an administrative fee. See also Administrative Services Only (ASO).
