SUMMARY:How losing measles elimination status could affect public health and families
DESCRIPTION:When the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) meets this month\, it’s expected to decide whether the U.S. will retain the measles elimination status it earned in 2000 or\, as many observers expect\, it will be revoked after more than a year of continuous endemic measles transmission. Join infectious disease physician experts to hear what the potential loss of measles elimination in the U.S. means\, the critical role rebuilding community immunity will play in getting it back\, and what conquering measles in the U.S. — again — will take. \n\n\n\nYou’ll hear from Noel Brewer\, chair of the committee reporting to PAHO on behalf of the U.S.; Paul Offit\, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP); Charlotte Moser\, co-director of the CHOP Vaccine Education Center; and Lisa McHugh\, the state epidemiologist of Pennsylvania\, the current epicenter of measles in the U.S. You’ll also get a first look at an excerpt from an upcoming documentary from CHOP’s Vaccine Education Center about community immunity and its role in fighting measles and other infectious diseases. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nModerator\n\n\n\n\nTara Haelle\n\n\n\nAHCJ’s Health Beat Leader for Public HealthTara Haelle is AHCJ’s health beat leader for infectious diseases and medical studies.
