SUMMARY:World AIDS Day
DESCRIPTION:World AIDS Day is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV\, to show support for people living with HIV\, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. Founded in 1988\, World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day. \nApproximately 37.9 million people across the globe were living with HIV/AIDS in 2018. In 2016\, nearly half of people in the United States (US) and dependent areas living with diagnosed HIV were aged 50 and older. Though new HIV diagnoses are declining among people aged 50 and older\, around 1 in 6 HIV diagnoses in 2017 were in this group\, according to the CDC. \n

SUMMARY:Exposing fraud in the generic drug industry: A reporter's journey
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED because of weather. Check back for information about when this is rescheduled. \nNew York investigative medical journalist Katherine Eban will talk about the industry and her new book “Bottle of Lies.” \nHer work reveals how rampant fraud among generic drug manufacturers and lax FDA oversight put patients’ health at risk. In the United States\, 90% of spending for all pharmaceuticals goes for generic drugs because health insurers limit choice by steering patients to these medications\, which are cheaper than brand-name drugs. \nPOSTPONED\nTIME:  6:30 pm   Wine and cheese at 6. \nWHERE: New York State Health Foundation\, 1385 Broadway at 38th St. \nRSVP:  trudy.lieberman@gmail.com \nEban participated in an AHCJ webcast on the subject. This New York chapter event will give you a chance to delve more into her work and ask questions.
