SUMMARY:Approaches to Improving the Occupational Safety and Health Surveillance System
DESCRIPTION:New Report and Webinar Jan. 9\nThe landscape and nature of work in the United States has changed remarkably over the past several decades. Yet occupational safety and health (OSH) surveillance approaches have generally not evolved to address these shifts in the changing nature of work. \nA new report from the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine recommends a number of actions aimed at improving the coordination and cost-effectiveness of the OSH surveillance system. It looks specifically at areas such as injury and illness recording enhancement\, interagency coordination\, and state-based OSH surveillance programs. \nAdvance copies of “A Smarter National Surveillance System for Occupational Safety and Health in the 21st Century” will be available to reporters only beginning at noon EST on Monday\, Jan. 8. The report is embargoed and not for public release before 11 a.m. EST on Tuesday\, Jan. 9. \nMembers of the committee that conducted the study and wrote the report will present their findings and recommendations and answer questions during a webinar beginning 2 p.m. EST Tuesday\, Jan. 9. Participants are: \n\n\nEdward H. Shortliffe (committee chair)\, Arizona State University \n\n\nDavid L. Buckeridge\, McGill University \n\n\nMargaret M. Seminario\, AFL-CIO \n\n\nDavid H. Wegman\, University of Massachusetts \n\n\nPlease register for the webinar here.  Reporters who wish to obtain a copy of the report should contact the Office of News and Public Information at tel. 202-334-2138 or e-mail news@nas.edu.

SUMMARY:SciCommSouth
DESCRIPTION:The South Central States (Texas\, New Mexico\, Oklahoma\, Arkansas\, and Louisiana) are located where scientific innovation\, fragile biomes\, and the dynamic energy\, biotech\, and biomedical industries all meet political conservatism. The issues facing a science communicator in the region couldn’t be more diverse or important. \nDespite their unique geographic and political position\, the science communicators in the region are only loosely connected to each other\, if at all. We recognize the power of strong connections among science communicators\, not just for professional development\, but for moral support in what may be a more challenging era for science than in the past. \nHighlights\n\n\nKeynote by David Biello\, Science Curator of the TED Conferences \n\n\nBreakout sessions to facilitate networking and collaboration among previously-disparate science communicators. \n\n\nThe Art of Science Slideshow: Do you have a stunning visual that illustrates one of your science stories? Hayley Gillespie\, owner of Art.Science.Gallery will put together a slideshow featuring our images — photos\, illustrations\, data plots\, infographics\, posters\, you name it — for the evening reception.  \n\n\nRegister by Nov. 15 for the early bird discount. SUMMARY:Will the Real Cost Drivers Please Stand Up?
DESCRIPTION:High health care spending is a top concern for policymakers\, advocates and consumers alike. But what is driving our ever-increasing spending? New research provides details about the relative importance of various cost drivers (e.g.\, unit prices\, disease prevalence and intensity\, obesity\, etc.)\, both overall and within patient diagnoses groups (e.g.\, diabetes or heart disease). This research identifies the cost drivers that matter most and actionable information we can use to tackle our high health care spending trend. \nSpeakers:  \n\n\nJoseph Dielman\, Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation\, University of Washington \n\n\nLarry Levitt\, Kaiser Family Foundation \n\n\nLynn Quincy\, Healthcare Value Hub (moderator) \n\n\nRegister here. \n
