SUMMARY:Behind the headlines: The separation of conjoined twins at MGH
DESCRIPTION:The Boston chapter of the Association of Health Care Journalists is back in business\, and we’re inviting you to a panel discussion and reception with key members of the team that separated 22-month-old conjoined twins at Massachusetts General Hospital\, knowing one would almost certainly die. The case raised a host of surgical and ethical challenges that Dr. Allan M. Goldstein\, surgeon-in-chief at MassGeneral Hospital for Children\, Dr. Brian M. Cummings\, chair of the hospital’s Pediatric Ethics Committee\, and Dr. Oscar J. Benavidez\, chief of pediatric/congenital cardiology\, will discuss. \nBefore the operation\, Dr. Cummings recently wrote\, the surgical team “talked through whether separation was technically possible. Were there enough organs to ‘make’ two people from one? What would happen afterward? The evaluation … concluded that separation was physically possible but Twin A would not survive afterwards. \n“Even though we could do the separation\, should we do it?” \nPlease join us for what’s sure to be a riveting conversation\, as well as a chance to mingle with your journalist colleagues and celebrate the coming holidays. \nWHEN: Wednesday\, Dec. 6\, 6-8 p.m.; appetizers and drinks at 6\, followed by the program at6:45. \nWHERE: New offices of The Boston Globe and Stat\, 53 State St.\, Boston (corner of State and Congress; please use the Congress Street entrance) \nRequired RSVP: If you plan to attend\, please RSVP to Alex Spinelli\, Alexander.Spinelli@statnews.com\, with your name and affiliation.

SUMMARY:Webcast: Covering antibiotic resistance in the post-antibiotic world

About 2 million Americans annually contract an antibiotic resistant bacteria and 23\,000 die\, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. \nIn some cases\, resistant bacteria have already meant patients are living in a “post-antibiotic” world. In 2016\, a Nevada woman died after developing an illness from bacteria that were resistant to all approved antibiotics in the U.S. \nHow are these bugs spreading? What is the U.S. doing to halt their spread? And how can reporters cover antibiotic resistance in their communities? Two CDC officials will talk to reports about this evolving story. \n\n\nMichael Bell\, M.D.\, deputy director of the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion\, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention \n\n\nMichael Craig\, senior adviser for antibiotic resistance coordination and strategy\, Division of Health Quality Promotion at the CDC Center for Emerging Zoonotic and Infectious Diseases \n\n\nModerator: Bara Vaida\, AHCJ core topic leader/infectious diseases \n\n\nAn expert in drug-resistant pathogens and hospital-acquired infections\, Michael Bell’s career has focused on investigating and preventing transmission of health care-associated illnesses for hospital patients and staff alike as well as developing evidence-based infection control guidelines. He began his CDC career in 1997 as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer. Bell earned a bachelor’s in biology and microbiology as well as the doctor of medicine from the University of Washington. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He completed a clinical fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of California\, San Francisco. \nMichael Craig leads the coordination of CDC’s cross-cutting antibiotic resistance activities by developing and guiding CDC’s strategic direction to address national goals to combat antibiotic resistance. Craig serves on the President’s Advisory Committee for Combatting Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (PACCARB)\, and works closely with leadership within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to align public health activities related to antibiotic resistance across multiple federal agencies. Before that\, he spent 12 years in Washington\, D.C.\, working for the CDC on various policy issues. \n<!– \nHow to participate\n» Please use this diagnostic test page to be sure you’re set up correctly to enter the webcast. \nClick here\, choose the “Enter as a Guest” option\, type in your name and click on the “Enter Room” option. \n–> \n\nMichael Bell \n\n\nMichael Craig \n\n\nBara Vaida \n\n
