SUMMARY:Treatment as Prevention: Can We Treat Our Way Out of the AIDS Epidemic?
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, December 1\, 2014 \n 12:30-1:30pm ET \nWith no cure or vaccine in sight\, HIV/AIDS remains a devastating epidemic\, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where nearly 70% of new HIV infections occur. To curb HIV/AIDS\, researchers have proposed a strategy to use drug treatment to decrease new transmissions so much that the epidemic eventually dies out. The concept requires changes in standards of when anti-retroviral therapy begins and who receives it. Could “treatment as prevention” prove to be the strategy to finally end the AIDS epidemic? \nModerator: Carol Hills\, senior producer and reporter\, PRI’s The World \nExpert Participants \n\nMark Wainberg\, director\, McGill AIDS Centre\, McGill University\nMax Essex\, chairman\, Harvard School of Public Health AIDS Initiative\nKenneth Mayer\, medical research director and co-chair of The Fenway Institute\nShahin Lockman\, associate professor in the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases\, Harvard School of Public Health\n\nWatch the Live Webcast Here on World AIDS Day \nE-mail questions for the expert participants any time before or during the live webcast to theforum@hsph.harvard.edu. Or Tweet them to @ForumHSPH using #TreatmentasPrevention2014. \nPart of: The Andelot Series on Current Science Controversies. \nPresented in Collaboration with PRI’s The World and WGBH \nBackground Articles \n\nHSPH AIDS Initiative Viral Load as an Anti-AIDS Hammer\nhttp://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2014/08/viral-load-as-an-anti-aids-hammer/

SUMMARY:ACA enrollment round II: Do consumers have the help they need?
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Atlanta chapter of the Association of Health Care Journalists and the nonpartisan Alliance for Health Reform for a special event focusing on the Affordable Care Act’s second open enrollment. \nThe Affordable Care Act’s second open enrollment period runs through mid-February\, and millions of people are already looking for help to find the best insurance fit. While many who signed up last year are expected to shop around for different health plans\, millions more may become first time buyers. \nThis briefing will explore the availability and usefulness of in-person assistance programs (navigators\, assisters and brokers) that are intended to help individuals search and apply for coverage. After last year’s enrollment difficulties\, we will look at the challenges of this second round\, with a particular focus on the help available to consumers. \n\n\nTrey Sivley\, division director in Georgia’s Division of Insurance and Financial Oversight Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner\, will address differences in the enrollment process from the first to the second enrollment cycle. \n\n\nLisa Stein\, vice president of work and family supports at Seedco\, a navigator program in Atlanta\, will discuss the help available to Georgians enrolling or reenrolling for coverage\, and also barriers to enrollment. \n\n\nCathy Bowden\, information management coordinator at The Georgia Association for Primary Health Care\, will address the role of primary care medical providers in getting information to consumers.  \n\n\nAndy Miller\, editor and CEO at Georgia Health News\, will provide an overview of enrollment in Georgia and talk about what stories reporters should pay attention to moving forward. \n\n\nWhen:Open bar and refreshments at 7 p.m.Program 7:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. \nLocation:Ri Ra Irish Pub1080 Peachtree St. NEAtlanta \nRSVP: Andy Miller (andymill111@yahoo.com or 404-386-8290) or Marilyn Werber Serafini (mserafini@allhealth.org or 202-789-2300). \nThis event is sponsored by AHCJ\, the Alliance for Health Reform and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

More fun than another Obamacare battle at the Supreme Court\, it’s the 4th annual… AHCJ Washington\, D.C.\, Chapter: Holiday Party! \nYou’re invited to the Association of Health Care Journalists’ D.C. chapter’s Holiday networking gathering! \nCome toast the holiday season with some craft beer from D.C. and Belgium and vintage wine — along with some light food as well. \nNo formal program – just a gathering to tell war stories from 2014 and look forward to another crazy year in 2015. We’ve invited some special guests from government and industry. \nDate & time: \n6 p.m. – 8 p.m.\, Dec. 4. \nLocation: The National Journal offices inside The Watergate at 600 New Hampshire Ave NW. \nAll health journalists are invited. Please RSVP by Dec. 2 to pgalewitz@kff.org. \nThe Details: The Watergate is across the street from the Kennedy Center.  If you walk in the main doors closest to New Hampshire Ave. and turn left\, you will see the elevators. We’ll have someone in the lobby to greet & get people upstairs.  Please plan to arrive no later than 7:15. \nMetro: Foggy Bottom is the closest Metro—about a 7 minute walk. When exiting the station\, walk in the opposite direction of the restaurants (Circa\, Whole Foods)\, and head through the GW campus and toward New Hampshire Ave and make a left. Go down New Hampshire and around the traffic circle in the direction of the Kennedy Center. \nDriving: Are you nuts? SUMMARY:Webinar: An introduction to the microbiome
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, experts will highlight recent efforts involving knowledge developed from study of the preterm infant\, a clean slate upon which a healthy microbiome is developed. They will also examine the impact for oral health as we mature and an industry perspective as it relates to research tools and resources. \nThe human body is host to trillions of microbes\, forming the microbiome that is found on the skin\, in the oral cavity and gut. The microbiota are partially responsible for maintaining a healthy ecological community\, but can also contribute to disease when an imbalance of microbes occurs. \nAs a result of technological advancement in DNA sequencing and reduction in sequencing costs\, the emerging field of metagenomics has fueled research in how microbes across the human body play a role in human health and disease including cancer\, fat malabsorption\, heart disease\, obesity\, diabetes\, and other health concerns. \nThe body’s flora represents a key area of research interest\, as it relates to immunology\, nutrition and digestion\, and other crucial aspects of human health. The recently formed NIH Common Fund Human Microbiome Project has been instrumental in providing research resources that enable the comprehensive characterization of the human microbiota. The webinar will also explore the future of this research. \nPresenters: \n\nCamila R. Martin\, M.D.\, M.S.\, Harvard Medical School\, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center\nFloyd E. Dewhirst\, The Forsyth Institute\nSasha Vlassov\, Thermo Fisher Scientific\n\nModerators: \n\nHoward Young\, Ph.D.\, NCI Laboratory of Experimental Immunology\, NIH Immunology Interest Group\nWinston Kuo\, DMSc\, IES Diagnostics\n\nClick Here for Full Information and Registration. \nDate & time:11 a.m. ET\, Dec. 4
