SUMMARY:Private Healthcare Exchanges Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Private Healthcare Exchanges conference July 16-17 in Chicago will focus on how the Affordable Care Act is changing the way insurers sell health insurance. Instead of marketing almost exclusively to employers\, the ACA has forced insurers to focus on enrolling consumers. The conference is sponsored by Employee Benefit News.

SUMMARY:Immigrant communities and access to health care
DESCRIPTION:Congress has stalled on immigration reform\, but that doesn’t mean the story of the health of immigrants\, and the health care needs of immigrants in the country without authorization\, goes away.  \nThe Affordable Care Act will make undocumented immigrants a larger proportion of the uninsured\, and many undocumented immigrants live in so-called multistatus families\, in which some members are citizens and some are undocumented. Evidence shows that the stigma of immigration status pervades immigrant communities\, meaning that even people with green cards or citizens sometimes do not pursue the healthcare they need\, or the care they’re entitled to. \nThis panel will describe the issue and help health care reporters cover the immigration effects on health in a balanced\, thoughtful way that gets beyond the talking heads and into the communities. \nPanelists: \nJirayut New Latthivongskorn is co-founder of Pre-Health Dreamers\, a group of young undocumented students interested in working in healthcare. New emigrated from Thailand to the Bay Area when he was 9 and is a recent graduate of the University of California-Berkeley\, with a bachelor’s degree in molecular and cellular biology. His experience in scientific research includes two years at the School of Public Health at Cal\, studying the essential genes of the murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) and\, most recently\, a summer research fellowship in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Weill Cornell Medical College\, examining the kidney’s functions. New aims to become a physician who practices medicine through a public health lens\, using primary care\, research\, and policy to shape health for the individual and the community. He helped start Pre-Health Dreamers in hopes of alleviating the barriers he has faced for future undocumented students pursuing their dreams in the health and sciences. \nDavid Bacon is a veteran reporter and photojournalist and author of Illegal People—How Globalization Creates Migration and Criminalizes Immigrants. According to Beacon Press\, Bacon’s publisher\, “Bacon powerfully traces the development of illegal status back to slavery and shows the human cost of treating the indispensable labor of millions of migrants-and the migrants themselves-as illegal. Illegal People argues for a sea change in the way we think\, debate\, and legislate around issues of migration and globalization\, making a compelling case for why we need to consider immigration and migration from a globalized human rights perspective.” \nModerator: \nHeather Boerner is a freelance health care journalist based in San Francisco. She recently completed the Dennis A. Hunt Grant for Health Journalism through the USC California Endowment Health Journalism Fellowships on health care access for undocumented immigrants. Her work appeared as radio/TV/web pieces for KPBS.org and as a feature in National Nurse Magazine. Another article\, on the mental health effects of deportation on children\, ran on Al Jazeera America. \n6-8 p.m. (light refreshments and networking 6-6:30; program begins at 6:30) \nLocation: New America Media offices\, 209 9th Street (near Howard St.)\, San FranciscoNearest BART: Civic Center station / street parking \nPlease RSVP: BayAreaAHCJ@gmail.com \nThis event is free. You don’t have to be an AHCJ member to attend.

SUMMARY:Obamacare: Covering What Comes Next
DESCRIPTION:The Affordable Care Act\, or Obamacare\, raises complex and often very personal questions for Americans. Reporters can learn the facts and nuances of this program\, how it works\, what it means and how to localize this story. \n\nThe workshop is the first in a series of six 2014 Specialized Reporting Institutes funded by the Robert R. McCormick Foundation to give reporters the knowledge\, context\, contacts and story ideas they need to cover critical topics in the news. AHCJ is partnering with the Poynter Institute to host this workshop at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland\, College Park. Sessions will be held in The Eaton Theater and the Herb Block Room. \nHere’s what you’ll learn: \n\nHow insurance works and how journalists can measure the ACA’s performance\nHow to put a face on the story\nWhat’s next: Will the Young Invincibles sign up? Can providers handle the new load of patients?\nHow to find stories hidden in data\nWhat’s in the next wave of health care reform\, and the ethical questions you need to ask\nAt least 30 story ideas to take home\n\nClick HERE for a draft workshop agenda. \nParticipants receive a one-year paid membership to AHCJ. \nOur goals for this intensive workshop are straightforward. We will not focus on political fights and computer glitches\, which get a lot of coverage already. Instead we will help journalists understand health care insurance and health policy. You will hear from top-notch journalists who have covered the Affordable Care Act since it was being drafted in Congress. \nThis workshop is open to working journalists from any media\, including network and cable television\, radio\, newspaper\, magazine and online journalists. We welcome applications from reporters\, producers\, photojournalists\, graphic designers\, full-time freelancers\, news managers and editors. From our application pool\, we will select a class of 25 participants who represent a wide range of market sizes\, media\, geography and media ownership\, including minority media. We will give priority to full-time U.S. based journalists. \nApplications are no longer being accepted for this training.

SUMMARY:Covering news about screenings\, preventive health recommendations
DESCRIPTION:Resources\nSee a recording of this webcast. \nSpeakers’ presentation: \n679.3 kB PDF \n\nJan. 28\, 2 p.m. ET\nThe U.S. Preventive Services Task Force often finds itself in the news when determining what works and doesn’t work in screenings and preventive care. It told healthy women not to bother with calcium and vitamin D pills\, said many women could wait on mammograms until age 50 and recently clarified who might benefit from regular lung cancer screening tests. \nThe task force’s work lies in translating medical evidence into clinical practice\, which can be a difficult and contentious task. Its recommendations are often nuanced and misunderstood. \nHow does the group come to these determinations and how can you report on the science and not just the heat a recommendation generates? What is evidence-based medicine and how does the USPSTF use it to make recommendations on health care services? \nIn this webcast\, USPSTF chair Dr. Virginia Moyer and co-vice chair Dr. Michael LeFevre will explain how the task force works in an effort to deepen our reporting of upcoming task force recommendations. A Q&A with the doctors\, moderated by AHCJ medical studies topic leader Brenda Goodman\, will follow. \n<!– \nHow to participate\nThis is an event for AHCJ members\, so you will need your AHCJ user name and password to access the webcast. Click here if you need help or contact info@healthjournalism.org. About 15 minutes before the webcast begins\, a link to the webcast will be added to this page. \n–> \nAbout the speakers\nVirginia A. He maintains an active family medicine practice. \nLeFevre served for a decade as the chief medical information officer for University of Missouri Health Care. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies in 2011 and has been named to the “Best Doctors in America” list annually since 1996. \nHis research and clinical interests include family medicine\, information technology in clinical care\, clinical practice guidelines\, preventive services\, and women’s health care. \nLeFevre has been a member of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force since January 2005 and was appointed co-vice chair in March 2011. \nBrenda Goodman is AHCJ’s medical studies core topic leader. Her stories have appeared in Scientific American\, The New York Times\, Psychology Today\, Self\, Health\, Parade and The Boston Globe. She is a regular news writer for WebMD.
