SUMMARY:Private Healthcare Exchanges Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Private Healthcare Exchanges conference July 16-17 in Chicago will focus on how the Affordable Care Act is changing the way insurers sell health insurance. Instead of marketing almost exclusively to employers\, the ACA has forced insurers to focus on enrolling consumers. The conference is sponsored by Employee Benefit News.

SUMMARY:Childhood Immunization Schedule & Safety: Stakeholder Concerns\, Scientific Evidence & Future Studies
DESCRIPTION:Roughly 90 percent of American children receive most childhood vaccines as advised by the federal immunization schedule. However\, some parents spread out their children’s immunizations over a longer time frame and a small fraction object to having their children immunized at all. Their concerns arise in part from the number and timing of doses that children receive; the schedule entails 24 immunizations by age 2 given in amounts ranging from one to five injections during a pediatric visit. \n“The Childhood Immunization Schedule and Safety: Stakeholder Concerns\, Scientific Evidence\, and Future Studies\,” a new report from the Institute of Medicine\, examines evidence about the schedule’s safety and recommends the best way to conduct any needed investigations. Members of the committee that wrote the report will discuss their conclusions and recommendations during a one-hour telephone briefing starting at 11 a.m. EST on Wednesday\, Jan. 16. \nAdvance copies of the report will be available to reporters only beginning at noon EST Tuesday\, Jan. 15. The report is embargoed and not for release before 11 a.m. EST Wednesday\, Jan. 16.  Reporters: To obtain an embargoed copy and receive call-in information for the telephone briefing\, contact the National Academies’ Office of News and Public Information; tel. 202-334-2138 or e-mail news@nas.edu. More information on the study is available at http://www.iom.edu/Activities/PublicHealth/ChildhoodImmunization.aspx. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program: Examining the Evidence to Define Benefit Adequacy
DESCRIPTION:New Report Presents Framework for Identifying Factors Likely to Impact Adequacy of Federal Food Assistance Program\nA new report from the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council identifies factors that the U.S. Department of Agriculture should consider as it assesses the adequacy of the benefits package offered through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)\, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program.  The report establishes an objective definition of benefit adequacy in terms of whether the SNAP allotment enables participants to meet the program’s goals of improved food security and access to a healthy diet\, not whether all participants will reach these goals.  The report does not recommend specific changes to the SNAP allotment. \nSeveral members of the committee will discuss the report’s findings and recommendations during a one-hour telephone public briefing starting at 11 a.m. EST Thursday\, Jan. 17. \nAdvance copies of “Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program: Examining the Evidence to Define Benefit Adequacy” will be available to reporters only beginning at noon EST Wednesday\, Jan. 16.  The report is embargoed and not for release before 11 a.m. EST on Jan. 17. \nReporters: To obtain an embargoed copy and receive call-in information for the telephone public briefing\, contact the National Academies’ Office of News and Public Information; tel. 202-334-2138 or e-mail news@nas.edu.
