SUMMARY:The Chronic Pain Epidemic: What's to Be Done?
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, Nov. 10\, 2016 \n12:30-1:30 p.m. ET \n\n\n11 a.m. ET – a brief pre-event Q&A with panelist Vaughan Rees and moderator David Freeman. \n\n\n12:30 p.m. ET – the full one-hour panel discussion \n\n\nMore than 100 million Americans struggle with chronic pain\, according to one Institute of Medicine estimate\, at an annual cost of as much as $635 billion in treatment and lost productivity. Further\, the misuse of potent opioid painkillers\, while increasing risk of addiction and abuse\, can confuse the conversation around appropriate chronic pain management. This Forum brings together a panel of experts to discuss the causes\, treatment and impact of chronic pain\, while exploring the neuroscience behind the pain experience. The panelists will examine how clinicians can best serve their patients\, highlighting the recommendations of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ recent National Pain Strategy. The Forum will look at myriad pain management options\, including marijuana and mindfulness meditation. And panelists will examine relevant pain care policies\, including prescription monitoring program regulations\, drug development and funding for research. \nPresented by The Forum at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health jointly with The Huffington Post. \nExpert Participants \n\n\nJosephine Briggs\, Director\, National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health\, NIH \n\n\nAnne Louise Oaklander\, Associate Professor of Neurology\, Harvard Medical School\, and an attending neurologist\, Massachusetts General Hospital \n\n\nVaughan Rees\, addiction specialist and Lecturer on Social and Behavioral Sciences\, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health \n\n\nCindy Steinberg\, National Director of Policy and Advocacy\, U.S. Pain Foundation; Member\, Interagency Pain Research Coordinating Committee\, NIH; and Policy Council Chair\, Massachusetts Pain Initiative \n\n\nModerator \n\n\nDavid Freeman\, Managing Editor\, Impact & Innovation\, The Huffington Post \n\n\nWatch the webcast:\nForumHSPH.org. Send questions in advance to theforum@hsph.harvard.edu. There will be a live chat on The Forum’s Chronic Pain Epidemic web page and the event will stream live on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Forumhsph/. Follow @ForumHSPH and #chronicpain on Twitter. Forum video will be posted on-demand after the event. \nContact: Marjorie Dwyer: mhdwyer@hsph.harvard.edu; 617-432-8416
