SUMMARY:NAS workshop on sugar-sweetened beverages and children
DESCRIPTION:The National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine hosts “Limiting Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Consumption in Young Children\,” a two-day workshop examining policies and programs aimed at curbing the consumption of sugary drinks by young children. Panelists will evaluate federal\, state\, and local efforts to reduce consumption among youth age 5 and younger. Panelists will also discuss the role of social equity and health disparities on such drink consumption\, including income\, geography\, lifestyle and ethnicity\, NAS said. The event will be held at NAS headquarters in Washington\, D.C\, as well as online via webcast.

DESCRIPTION:National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine holds a one-day workshop in Prattville\, Alabama\, on the “Challenges and Opportunities in Achieving Rural Health Equity.” Hosted by NAS’ Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity and the Elimination of Health Disparities and its Roundtable on Population Health Improvement\, the event will include discussion of efforts aimed at tackling “systematic disinvestment in rural communities and implications for improving the social determinants of health\, including access to and quality of health care services.” It also aims to show some “promising and constructive actions” that some rural communities are taking to improve their residents’ health and well-being\, according to NAS. It will also address how economic issues\, immigration and racial inequities affect health in rural  U.S. areas. The workshop will also be available via webcast.

DESCRIPTION:Free workshop focuses on covering rural America\n\n\n\nAHCJ’s ninth Rural Health Journalism Workshop will bring journalists together with health care and policy experts who focus on the medical challenges of rural areas. \n\n\n\nLeave with a better understanding of what’s happening – or will be happening – in rural regions\, and return to work with dozens of story ideas you can pursue. \n\n\n\nThis special one-day\, no-fee workshop will help you find and cover health stories in rural America. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will be 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. on June 9 at the Millennium Hotel\, Cincinnati\, with breakfast and lunch provided. Early-bird registration ended June 1\, but you may register onsite by bringing the completed registration form with you. \n\n\n\nHear about county-level data\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe luncheon speaker will be Julie Willems Van Dijk\, the director of County Health Rankings and Roadmaps\, an annual measure of vital health factors revealing a snapshot of how health is influenced by where we live\, learn\, work and play. \n\n\n\nThe rankings measure vital health factors\, including high school graduation rates\, obesity\, smoking\, unemployment\, access to healthy foods\, the quality of air and water\, income inequality\, and teen births. \n\n\n\nTravel assistance\n\n\n\nAlthough the workshop is free to attend and includes two meals\, we understand some journalists may still need assistance to get to Cincinnati. We do have a limited amount of stipend funding to assist with travel for those in need.
