SUMMARY:Dope is Death film discounts
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Chapter of AHCJ is proud to be an official community sponsor of an upcoming film in the highly regarded Cleveland International Film Festival – CIFF44. \nMembers in the Cleveland area are invited to use the official discount code: AHCJ to purchase a ticket to see a screening of DOPE IS DEATH at Tower City Cinemas\, Saturday\, March 28\, 2020 at 11:50 AM\, Sunday\, March 29\, 2020 at 6:10 PM or Monday\, March 30\, 2020 at 4:15 PM. Tickets are available to the public for purchase beginning Friday\, March 13th at 11 am. \nDope is Death is the story of how the Young Lords and Black Panther Party — two inner-city human rights activist groups — created the first acupuncture detoxification program in America. Their drive to create a chemical-free detox program was in response government-funded clinics\, which used methadone to curb the painful heroin withdrawal symptoms\, but did not focus on eradicating chemical dependency. With Dr. Mutulu Shakur\, stepfather of Tupac Shukur\, serving as the frontman\, the detox program helped hundreds of patients in a safe and effective way and ultimately led to a protocol practiced in over 600 health care facilities in the U.S. alone.

SUMMARY:A Reporter’s Guide to Adolescent Learning and Well-Being
DESCRIPTION:Recent scientific advances have changed our understanding of the powerful role the adolescent years play in setting life trajectories. This critical period\, the bridge between childhood and becoming an adult\, is frequently misunderstood. \n“Although adolescence is often thought of as a time of turmoil and risk for young people\, it is more accurately viewed as a developmental period rich with opportunity for youth to learn and grow\,” declared a sweeping 2019 report from the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine. \nWhat are the implications of this evolving mindset for the education\, health and well-being of tweens\, teens and emerging adults? How are new findings informing efforts to shape settings for adolescents that are racially and culturally inclusive and equitable? This two-day seminar will offer journalists a primer on the brain research and springboard to an exploration of these questions and others facing the education and health sectors. \nEligible journalists may apply for scholarships to cover registration and reimburse expenses for lodging and basic travel costs. \nhttps://www.ewa.org/reporters-guide-adolescent-learning-and-well-being

Her observations about the coverage in the past\, and how it might look different in the future\, are timely as we come up on the 10th anniversary of the ACA in March. \n\n\nSarah Gollust\, Ph.D.\, associate professor\, health policy and management\, University of Minnesota School of Public Health \n\n\nModerator: Joanne Kenen\, AHCJ topic leader/health reform \n\n\nAn associate professor at the University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health\, Sarah Gollust has examined how the media translates health information\, how it shapes public attitudes and influences health policymaking. Looking at political\, social\, ethical\, and psychological factors\, her research yields insight into how communication to the public and policymakers can be more effective. In addition to looking at the Affordable Care Act\, she has also studied media and obesity\, food and nutrition\, health disparities\, and cancer screening and prevention. Gollust studied biology as an undergraduate at Wesleyan before going on to get her doctorate at the University of Michigan. She was also a pre-doctoral fellow in bioethics at the NIH’s\, National Human Genome Research Institute. She’s been at the University of Minnesota since 2010. \n\nSarah Gollust \n\n\nJoanne Kenen

SUMMARY:Webcast - The Future of National Health Insurance: Debates During a U.S. Presidential Election Year
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, Jan. 13\, live webcast at noon ET\nThe Democratic Presidential debates have surfaced two very different visions for the future of national insurance in the U.S. One is building on the Affordable Care Act enacted in 2010 by adding major changes\, including allowing individuals to voluntarily purchase Medicare or another public option plan. The other is to enact a new\, all-governmental health insurance program – Medicare for All. What are the issues and implications for the U.S. of choosing either of these two paths? \nNew York Times health care journalist Margot Sanger-Katz will moderate a panel discussion about the future of national health insurance in the United States. No registration is required to watch the event online. Send questions in advance to theforum@hsph.harvard.edu. The panel members will be Robert Blendon\, professor of health policy and political analysis\, at the  Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health; Phil Ellis\, president of Ellis Health Policy\, and Sara Collins\, vice president of the Commonwealth Fund.
