SUMMARY:Hiding in plain sight: California hospital data
DESCRIPTION:Does your local hospital place more cardiac stents than others? Do more of its patients leave the emergency room without being seen? Does it have a high level of C-section births? These questions and others are relatively easy to answer thanks to a data gold mine kept by the obscure California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development. \nIt doesn't matter if your hospital is public\, nonprofit or for-profit\, data on its patients and services are available online. \nCharles Ornstein\, senior reporter at ProPublica and president of AHCJ's board of directors\, will guide you through using the data to answer those questions and more. \nThis webinar\, co-sponsored by the Association of Health Care Journalists and the California Endowment Health Journalism Fellowships\, will give you a step-by-step guide to using this information and leave you with story ideas to take home with you. It helps to have a working knowledge of Excel but all participants are welcome. \nWhile this webinar will focus on the use of data available in California\, many other states have similar data repositories. This will give all participants\, regardless of state\, a solid understanding of how to analyze data and what kinds of questions data can help you answer. \n\nLinks for the webinar\nTip sheet: Ornstein prepared this tip sheet for downloading and working with the data. \nWe suggest that you download the data that Ornstein will be demonstrating. To do so\, download the "2009 pivot table" from this site. You also should have this reporting form (PDF). Also download the full dataset for 2009. \nFor those new to using Excel\, this tip sheet may prove useful: Intro to investigating health data using spreadsheets. \nSources of hospital data in other states \nSome examples of stories that can be done using this data: \nHospital chain profits by admitting high number of ER patients: A hospital chain has transferred an unusually high number of patients from its emergency rooms to its hospital beds\, gaining hundreds of millions of dollars by targeting people with Medicare. \nAs Hospital System Expands\, Patient Advocates Worry: Analysts and patient advocates worry about the growing leverage a nonprofit hospital system has in negotiating rates paid by insurers\, employers and patients. \nBig Hospital Clout Dictates Premiums: Hospital prices in the Sacramento region are among the highest in California\, driven in large part by the negotiating clout of the hospital chain Sutter Health \nData analysis reveals wide variation in use of heart procedures: An analysis of data from the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development shows a wide variation in how often patients receive elective angioplasties and angiographies. \n\nThis webinar was held Sept. 13\, 2011.

SUMMARY:Adverse Effects of Vaccines: Evidence and Causality
DESCRIPTION:Vaccines have dramatically reduced illnesses and deaths due to infectious diseases over the past century. However\, no pharmaceutical product is completely without risk and some people have experienced health problems associated with immunization. Adverse Effects of Vaccines: Evidence and Causality\, a new report from the Institute of Medicine\, presents a comprehensive synthesis of the scientific evidence about the potential risks of eight vaccines covered by the federal Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. The report identifies some risks that are linked to vaccines as well as some effects that are not caused by immunizations. \nAdvance copies will be available to reporters only beginning at 11 a.m. EDT Wednesday\, Aug. 24. The report is embargoed and not for public release before 11 a.m. EDT Thursday\, Aug. 25.   Journalists may join a one-hour telephone press conference at 11 a.m. EDT to discuss the report with members of the authoring committee.  Committee members will also discuss their findings and take questions from all interested individuals during a one-hour public webcast beginning at 1 p.m. EDT\, available through a link at http://www.iom.edu/vaccineadverseeffects. \nREPORTERS: To obtain a copy of the report and dial-in information for the telephone news conference and to arrange interviews with committee members\, contact the National Academies’ Office of News and Public Information; tel. 202-334-2138 or e-mail news@nas.edu. SUMMARY:The Future of Healthcare Reform: Bi-partisan panel featuring Daschle\, Dean\, Rove\, Barrasso
DESCRIPTION:Bi-partisan panel takes on implementing health care reform \nPassage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2009 was only the beginning. Implementation poses continuing challenges. States are getting into the discussions. So are the courts. SUMMARY:Health in the Headlines: A European conference on health journalism
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Coventry University and the Association of Health Care Journalistswith support from the Medical Journalists Association (UK) and EU's HeaRT project\nSpeakers will include health journalists\, researchers and policy officials from England\, the United States\, Ireland\, Italy\, Greece and other nations. \nHealth systems in Europe are complex\, costly\, under pressure from a growing elderly population and increasingly subject to complicated "reforms" and reorganization. Health research generates a daily flow of highly technical literature\, while powerful multinational drug companies spend millions on extensive public relations campaigns. \n \nFollow #ahcj11uk on Twitter or see our archive of tweets from the conference. \n\nWhile the public is dependent upon the news media for information on health\, public health campaigns\, news on health services and the latest new drugs and treatments\, only a minority of the journalists covering health stories have any specific training on health issues. Most are left to "learn on the job" – and many become too dependent on a diet of press releases and managed news. \n \n \nThe program \n \nThis conference aims to address some of the key issues in health journalism\, as well as the state of training of health journalists\, and pressures in modern newsrooms. See the schedule and who will be speaking. \n \n \n \n \nRegistration\n \nThe conference will be held in Coventry University's Ellen Terry Building. Coventry is easily accessible by road\, or rail\, and is just 15 minutes by train from Birmingham airport. \n \n \nEarly-bird registration for the conference is open until May 15\, offering savings of 30 percent or more on late registration: \n\n\nUK rate £100\nOutside UK rate £60\n\n \nRegister online. \n

The 2010-2011 fellowship class will come from Minnesota\, Iowa\, North Dakota\, South Dakota and Nebraska. \nThe aim of the program is to provide already-established journalists with the tools needed to improve the depth and amount of coverage focused on localizing critical health issues. The program is designed by journalists for journalists. Although the training is spread over a year’s time\, actual time away from the newsroom totals about two weeks. \nSpecifically\, we provide:\n\n\nA day-and-a-half fellowship kickoff session with a special focus on state health policy. (Planned for Sioux Falls\, S.D.\, July 14 & 15.) \n\n\nAn intense one-week health reporting boot camp at the Missouri School of Journalism featuring some of the top health journalists in the country.
