SUMMARY:Medicare Symposium for Journalists
DESCRIPTION:Seismic shifts are coming to Medicare. Thanks to the recent Supreme Court decision to uphold the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act\, many fundamental changes in the program are already under way. And depending on how the November elections play out\, many more could soon be on the horizon. \nJournalists and editors who may be called upon to cover Medicare are invited to learn more about this complex program at a unique event on the campus of the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor this fall.  \nOn Oct. 2\, 2012\, The Medicare NewsGroup\, in partnership with the Center for Healthcare Research & Transformation\, will host a free regional symposium for journalists on the basics of Medicare reform\, economics\, policies and quality initiatives. \nAttendees will learn about the most pressing Medicare issues from industry experts and those on the front lines of change in the program. The event will include speakers from AARP Michigan\, the Center for Healthcare Research & Transformation\, the University of Michigan Health System and the University of Michigan School of Public Health. \nThe event will be comprised of six dynamic sessions designed to give journalists a firm grounding in some of the most controversial aspects of the program. Sessions will include various presentation formats such as Q&A discussions and panel forum sessions. Journalists will leave each session with takeaways that will include story ideas\, source lists\, Medicare fact sheets and resource links. \n“Our goal is to give journalists\, who sometimes are thrown into the beat with limited resources and research budgets\, an intensive Medicare basics course so they can hit the ground running when it comes to Medicare reporting\,” says EJ Mitchell\, managing editor of The Medicare NewsGroup. “We hope the journalists who participate will feel more informed about the topic\, and will become more comfortable writing articles and analyses on the program and the politics surrounding it.” \nEvent Information \nTime: Program will run from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Date: Tuesday\, October 2 \nPrice: Free Location: University of Michigan–Ann Arbor (specific campus venue to be announced at a later date) Registration: Contact Alison Szot\, senior editor at The Medicare NewsGroup\, at 847-786-4480 or aszot@medicarenewsgroup.com \n\nAbout The Medicare NewsGroup \nCreated by journalists\, for journalists\, The Medicare NewsGroup is an independent resource for Medicare news\, policy and legislation with original and curated content. Optimized for reporters\, writers\, bloggers and editors who produce news and commentary on Medicare\, The website of the Medicare NewsGroup aims to be a digital encyclopedia of Medicare that organizes past\, current and future information\, news\, events\, research and legislation relating to the topic.

SUMMARY:Future of Medicine Summit VI
DESCRIPTION:The 2012 Future of Medicine Summit VI will feature local and nationally recognized speakers to share their wisdom. \nThe Future of Medicine is designed to engage physicians and key community stakeholders in the reformation of the County’s health care delivery system to one that make sense and addresses fundamental patient care and cost issues\, creating a road map to where medicine should be in five years. \nIn November of 2007 a summit of 135 of these stakeholders from Palm Beach County representing businesses\, physicians\, hospitals\, public health officials and elected officials\, gathered to begin the creation of this map. Using data collected from over 300 surveys done across the county they decided to create four distinct working groups to address health issues in the county. These groups were to address: \n\nCovering more people and improving access to primary care\nEncouraging and enhancing prevention and wellness activities across the county\nEnhancing quality of care and patient safety\nImproving the viability of physician practices and other healthcare providers\n\nEach of these working groups\, comprised of volunteers from the county\, have met on a regular basis since then and have created specific goals to address the mandates given them.  The work is re-addressed each year with an annual Summit. \nThe Summit is partnering with Scripps Florida to explore three areas relevant to many in the general public\, as well as physicians and health care providers.  This year three chronic conditions will be covered:  diabetes\, heart disease\, and mental health with a focus on bipolar disorder.

That information came from the Current Population Survey\, but it isn’t the only data that Census is releasing on the uninsured. \nCensus is preparing a second report that it will announce Sept. 20 – based on the American Community Survey – that will offer a more local view of insurance coverage. It will go beyond state data to examine recent trends in cities\, many counties\, and in congressional districts. This survey is much larger\, and can be used to examine sub-state data and smaller demographic subgroups. \nHow are various demographic groups faring when it comes to insurance coverage? Specific geographic areas? What are the trends moving forward? \nLeading uninsured experts will answer these questions – and your questions – the day before Census releases its second set of numbers. \nSPEAKERS: \nLynn Blewett\, director\, State Health Access Data Assistance Center\, University of Minnesota \nPeter Cunningham\, senior fellow\, Center for Studying Health System Change \nRachel Garfield\, associate director\, Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured \nEd Howard\, executive vice president\, Alliance for Health Reform\, will moderate. \nTO WATCH THIS LIVE WEBINAR: Log onto www.allhealth.org a few minutes before 1:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Sept. 19. No charge. No registration needed. To ask a question during the webinar\, email ZackThompson@allhealth.org or tweet @AllHealthReform. \nPresentations from the speakers and many other downloadable resources on this topic will be available\, along with an expert source list\, the day of the webinar\, at www.allhealth.org. \nSPONSORS: Alliance for Health Reform\, Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured \nCONTACT: Marilyn Werber Serafini mserafini@allhealth.org | (202) 789-2300

SUMMARY:IOM Workshop: Infectious Disease Detection
DESCRIPTION:The systems to detect and respond to infectious disease outbreaks have suffered decades of underfunding and neglect in the United States and other countries\, and the global financial crisis has worsened the problem.  At the same time\, the recent outbreak of hantavirus in Yosemite National Park\, illnesses due to salmonella-contaminated mangoes\, the whooping cough epidemic in Washington state\, and reports of increasingly drug-resistant tuberculosis abroad all point to the crucial need for systems that can effectively prevent\, detect\, and mount a rapid response to infectious agents. \nThe Institute of Medicine is hosting a two-day workshop to explore how to maintain effective infectious disease surveillance and response capacity in an age of austerity.  Participants will look at the impact of budget cutbacks on population health and public health agencies among other topics. \nThe workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. EDT on Sept. 10\, and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EDT on Sept. 11 in Room 100 of the National Academies’ Keck Center\, 500 Fifth St.\, N.W.\, Washington\, D.C.  An agenda and registration are available online. Reporters with questions can contact the National Academies’ Office of News and Public Information; tel. 202-334-2138 or e-mail news@nas.edu.
