SUMMARY:ECRI Institute’s 19th Annual Conference on the Use of Evidence in Policy and Practice
DESCRIPTION:This free conference featuring 40 nationally recognized experts will examine the evidence of “what works and why it works” in American health care. Certain systems produce better outcomes than others\, but attention seldom focuses on what elements within these health care systems produce positive change. \nThe conference’s examination of “systemness” will include:\n\nWhat is “systemness?”\nWhich elements within mature health care systems result in the best clinical outcomes?\nAre approaches taken by long-established health care systems transferable to smaller\, newer\, or less integrated systems?\nAre financial incentives alone enough to drive change?\nHow can EHRs help improve “systemness?”\nDo “transformation” units within health systems produce results?\n\nThis conference will be an important step towards encouraging healthcare systems to evaluate what is working for them and what is working for others by examining the evidence. \nThere is no fee to attend the program\, but space is limited and advance registration is required. \nFollow the conversation on twitter with #EIConf12

SUMMARY:Application deadline: AHCJ Reporting Fellowships on Health Performance
DESCRIPTION:The AHCJ Reporting Fellowships on Health Care Performance is a yearlong program allowing journalists to pursue a significant reporting project related to the U.S. health care system. It can be local or national in scope\, or a little of both — say an aspect of the Affordable Care Act playing out in your community or subject specialty\, or the impact of particular evidence-based treatments on health outcomes\, or an analysis of a health care organization’s performance\, using public data sets. Fellows pursue the projects with the support of their newsrooms or freelance outlets\, which commit to publish or air the work. \nGuidance is provided by AHCJ fellowship leaders through customized seminars on health care systems\, conference calls and email consultations. The fellowship covers the cost of attending the seminars and AHCJ conferences\, and a project allowance is available to defray the cost of field reporting\, health data analysis and other project-related research. In addition\, each fellow will receive a $2\,500 fellowship award upon the successful completion of the project. \nExtended deadline!\nBecause of power outages and other woes brought upon the East Coast by Hurricane Sandy\, AHCJ has extended the deadline for applications by a few days. New deadline: Nov. 12 \n• Understanding and applying for the fellowship

SUMMARY:The state countdown: Fate of exchanges after the election
DESCRIPTION:Recording of the webcast\nWe have posted a recording of the webcast for AHCJ members. You will need your AHCJ username and password to access the recording. \nIf you don’t know your username and/or password\, click here and enter your email address to get a one-click login key. \nCoverage of the webcast\n\n\nNational panel weighs in on future of health exchange in Missouri\, St. Louis Post-Dispatch \n\n\nArio: Subsidies at risk\, Politico \n\n\n\nJust days after the November elections\, states will have to make final (or reasonably final) decisions about whether they are going to run their own health insurance exchange and what that will look like – or whether the federal government will take responsibility for all or part of the exchange. \nStates also are grappling with decisions about the essential benefits packages\, and although there’s no deadline\, expect the pace of their Medicaid expansion decision making to pick up after elections. \nIf President Obama is re-elected\, states will probably pick up the pace of implementation. If Mitt Romney wins\, they will probably anticipate repeal – but what happens to all the preparatory work they’ve been doing for the past two years\, and will it contribute to new state-based solutions that Romney says he wants? We’ll talk to three experts who are doing hands-on work with both “red” and “blue” states. \nSpeakers:\n\n\nJoel Ario\, managing director\, Manatt Health Solutions \n\n\nCheryl Smith\, director\, Leavitt Partners \n\n\nHeather Howard\, lecturer in public affairs\, Princeton University; director\, State Health Reform Assistance Network \n\n\nModerator: Joanne Kenen\, AHCJ topic leader/health reform; deputy health care editor\, Politico Pro \n\n\n \nJoel Ario is a managing director of Manatt Health Solutions\, an interdisciplinary policy and business advisory practice of Manatt\, Phelps & Phillips\, LLP. He has more than 30 years of experience helping to shape and implement public policy\, including more than 15 years devoted to leading health insurance reform efforts at the state and federal government levels. Ario provides strategic consulting and policy analysis to assist state governments\, health plans and foundations in preparing for the implications of healthcare reform\, with a particular emphasis on implementing health insurance exchanges. He previously served as director of the Office of Health Insurance Exchanges at the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS)\, where he led efforts to implement provisions of President Obama’s health care reform initiative. He was the administration’s point person for standing up health insurance exchanges. Prior to his federal service\, Ario was Pennsylvania insurance commissioner. He served on the executive committee of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) for a decade and was elected three times to as an NAIC officer. He was also president of the National Insurance Producer Registry for two years and executive director of the Oregon State Public Interest Research Group for seven years. \nCheryl Smith is a director at Leavitt Partners\, where she helps guide the firm’s health insurance exchange practice. Smith worked in the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development as the director of the Utah Health Exchange office. There she played a central role in Utah’s Health Insurance Exchange\, one of only two functioning state health insurance exchanges in the country. Her leadership and expertise drew national attention as Utah’s health insurance exchange was recognized in the Washington Post\, The Boston Globe\, The Wall Street Journal\, Forbes.com\, and BusinessWeek.com. Smith was a Visiting Health Policy Fellow at The Heritage Foundation in Washington\, D.C. While at Heritage she focused her research\, analysis\, and writing on the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)\, Medicare drug pricing\, and state health system reform. \nHeather Howard is a lecturer in public affairs at Princeton University and director of the State Health Reform Assistance Network\, a program funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She served as the commissioner of health and senior services for New Jersey\, where she was responsible for oversight of public health services\, regulation of health care institutions\, hospital financing\, senior services\, and health care policy and research. Her prior public policy experience includes work in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives\, for the Domestic Policy Council at the White House\, and for the Health Care Task Force within the Antitrust Division at the U.S. Justice Department.

SUMMARY:Future of Medicine Summit VI
DESCRIPTION:The 2012 Future of Medicine Summit VI will feature local and nationally recognized speakers to share their wisdom. \nThe Future of Medicine is designed to engage physicians and key community stakeholders in the reformation of the County’s health care delivery system to one that make sense and addresses fundamental patient care and cost issues\, creating a road map to where medicine should be in five years. \nIn November of 2007 a summit of 135 of these stakeholders from Palm Beach County representing businesses\, physicians\, hospitals\, public health officials and elected officials\, gathered to begin the creation of this map. Using data collected from over 300 surveys done across the county they decided to create four distinct working groups to address health issues in the county. These groups were to address: \n\nCovering more people and improving access to primary care\nEncouraging and enhancing prevention and wellness activities across the county\nEnhancing quality of care and patient safety\nImproving the viability of physician practices and other healthcare providers\n\nEach of these working groups\, comprised of volunteers from the county\, have met on a regular basis since then and have created specific goals to address the mandates given them.  The work is re-addressed each year with an annual Summit. \nThe Summit is partnering with Scripps Florida to explore three areas relevant to many in the general public\, as well as physicians and health care providers.  This year three chronic conditions will be covered:  diabetes\, heart disease\, and mental health with a focus on bipolar disorder.
