SUMMARY:Philadelphia Chapter — State health law implementation: Race to the starting line
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Philadelphia chapter of the Association of Health Care Journalists on Tuesday\, June 18 for a special event to explore the challenges that Pennsylvania and New Jersey face this year leading up to the 2014 health law changes. \nDate: June 18 \nTime: 6 p.m. beer/wine and appetizers\, 6:30-8 p.m. briefing \nLocation: Philadelphia Inquirer Public Room (801 Market St. #300). Parking is across the street\, at 8th and Market. \nThis year the giant health law begins to move into its most climactic phase. Tens of millions of people are about to get health insurance\, and this meeting will help reporters understand the epic challenges ahead. The health law requires that everyone carry insurance by 2014\, and new\, online exchanges are meant to help individuals and small businesses obtain coverage. About half of states – including Pennsylvania and New Jersey – are leaving the creation and operation of the exchanges to the federal government. Insurers have begun to submit plan types and proposed premiums to federal regulators\, and details are expected to be publicly announced by August. Enrollment is planned to start in October with the first plans going live in January\, 2014. \nYet another big change is the expansion of Medicaid\, which states can accept or reject. New Jersey has chosen to expand its program\, while Pennsylvania will not. \nThese developments mark the biggest changes in health insurance in more than a generation and will raise many questions. How will federal insurance exchanges work? Will they even get off the ground by the Oct. 1 deadline? Will people know how to enroll? Will the plans be affordable? Without the Medicaid expansion\, many of Pennsylvania’s estimated 1.4 million uninsured may be unable to participate. What does this mean for them and for the financial health of hospitals? With so many more people covered in both states\, will there be a shortage of physicians\, as many experts expect? \nThis briefing will help you answer these questions for your readers\, viewers and listeners. \nPanelists: \n\n\nKaren Pollitz\, senior fellow at the Kaiser Family Foundation and former Obama administration official \n\n\nGerald Katz\, owner\, Healthcare Management Consulting \n\n\nUwe Reinhardt\, professor of economics and public affairs at Princeton University \n\n\nKarl Stark\, health editor of The Philadelphia Inquirer \n\n\nModerator: Marilyn Werber Serafini\, communications director and health policy advisor at the Alliance for Health Reform\, a nonpartisan\, nonprofit health policy group in Washington\, DC \nPlease RSVP to Marilyn Serafini 240-401-3514 mserafini@allhealth.org \nThis briefing is sponsored by AHCJ\, the Alliance for Health Reform and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

SUMMARY:Chicago chapter: Changing Costs and Care at the End of Life
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of the “death panels” controversy that demonized efforts to compensate physicians for conversations with patients\, there is a growing movement to improve end of life care. Billions of dollars are spent annually on Medicare patients for care delivered in the final months of their lives\, much of it unnecessary\, painful\, duplicative and unwanted. \nStudies have shown that earlier use of palliative and hospice care and advance care planning can not only improve the quality of life and care\, but also lengthen lifespan\, improve patient satisfaction and cut costs. This panel will discuss how hospitals\, physicians and advocates are working with patients to improve end of life care. \nModerator: Mark Taylor\, independent journalist \nPanelists: \n\n\nFormer WGN producer and reporter Randi Belisomo\, co-founder of Life Matters Media \n\n\nNorthwestern University oncologist Mary Mulcahy\, M.D.\, co-founder of Life Matters Media \n\n\nJulie Goldstein\, M.D.\, a palliative care physician  \n\n\nMartha Twaddle\, M.D.\, nationally recognized expert on end of life care and the medical director of the Midwest Palliative and Hospice CareCenter \n\n\nModerator: Mark Taylor\, independent journalist \nPanelists:Former WGN producer and reporter Randi Belisomo and co-founder of Life Matters MediaNorthwestern University oncologist Mary Mulcahy\, M.D. and co-founder of Life Matters MediaJulie Goldstein\, M.D.\, a palliative care physician  \nTime: 6 p.m. refreshments\, 6:30 p.m. program \nLocation: \nColumbia College Journalism Department33 East Congress\, corner of Wabash and Congress\, under the L tracksRoom 219 \nThanks to Columbia College for the venue! \nRSVP to ahcj_chicago@mac.com

SUMMARY:Joint Commission Experts Discuss Disaster Preparedness for Health Care Organizations
DESCRIPTION:The Joint Commission will hold a telephone news conference to discuss its emergency management standards and the actions required of all Joint Commission-accredited health care organizations to prepare for an “all-hazards” event from a natural disaster to a terrorist attack. \nThe Joint Commission has required disaster planning for more than 30 years\, requiring organizations to identify the potential emergencies that could affect them\, and develop a plan that addresses the four phases of emergency management activities: mitigation\, preparedness\, response\, and recovery. Emergency management plans must also address command structures\, backup communications systems\, building evacuations\, and coordination with other community health care organizations and emergency responders. \nThis call will explain how The Joint Commission’s Emergency Management standards help organizations prepare for and respond to a tragedy such as the tornado in Moore\, Okla.\, and answer questions from the media. \nWednesday\, May 22\, 201312:30 p.m. ET\, 11:30 a.m. CT\, 10:30 a.m. MT\, 9:30 a.m. PT             \nTo access the call\, dial 800-311-9406; Pass code: 644771 \nExperts participating: \n\n\nGeorge Mills\, M.B.A.\, F.A.S.H.E.\, C.E.M.\, C.H.F.M.\, C.H.S.P.\,  director\, Department of Engineering\, Division of Healthcare Improvement\, The Joint Commission \n\n\nJohn Maurer\, C.H.F.M.\, C.H.S.P.\, engineer\, Department of Engineering\, Division of Healthcare Improvement\, The Joint Commission \n\n\nDaniel J. SUMMARY:Cleveland chapter — State health law implementation: Race to the starting line
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Cleveland-Akron chapter of the Association of Health Care Journalists for a media briefing on Thursday\, May 16. \nTopic: The complex issues that Ohio faces this year\, leading up to major 2014 health law changes. \nDate: Thursday\, May 16 \nTime: 6 p.m. open bar and appetizers; 6:30 p.m. program \nLocation: Cleveland State University’s Levine College of Urban Affairs (Bonda Room – 2nd Floor) 2121 Euclid Avenue\, Cleveland\, OH 22115. Parking in the garage gives you direct access to the building (cost is $8). There is also plenty of free street parking starting at 6 p.m. \nThe panel will include: \n\n\nSarah Dash\, research faculty associate at Georgetown University’s Health Policy Institute\, who will address the complex insurance aspects of implementing the health law\, and how the insurance exchange will work. \n\n\nRandall Cebul\, director of the Center for Health Care Research and Policy at MetroHealth\, and professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine\, who will discuss challenges facing hospitals such as health information technology adoption\, potential workforce shortages\, etc. \n\n\nRichard Browdie\, president and CEO\, Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging\, who will talk about Ohio Medicaid initiatives and the challenges of caring for older beneficiaries\, who tend to be among the most expensive in the program. \n\n\nSarah Jane Tribble\, health care reporter\, The Plain Dealer\, who will suggest story ideas and tips on writing about the health law changes. \n\n\nModerator: Marilyn Werber Serafini\, communications director and health policy adviser\, Alliance for Health Reform\, a nonpartisan\, nonprofit health policy group based in Washington\, D.C. \n\n\nWHY: Less than a year from now\, states must be ready to enroll millions of people in insurance exchanges\, as outlined in the 2010 health care overhaul law. Or\, the federal government will step in to do the job\, or part of it. \nStates also have the option of opening their Medicaid programs to millions of new participants. But that’s not much time\, considering their long to-do lists. \nDespite pushback from the Republican-controlled Ohio General Assembly\, Ohio Gov. John Kasich is still hoping to expand the state’s Medicaid program and is committed to seeking federal help with the state’s insurance exchange. \n\n\nWhat information do the states still need about how the federal and partnership exchanges will work? \n\n\nHow much latitude will the states have to handle eligibility for Medicaid and to make sure that people transitioning between Medicaid and subsidized private insurance in the exchanges won’t have gaps in coverage? \n\n\nCan the federal government be ready with its own exchanges? \n\n\nWill insurers be ready in time? \n\n\nCome to the briefing and find out! \nPlease RSVP to Eileen Beal 216-320-1358 eojb@visn.net. \nThis media briefing is sponsored by AHCJ and the Alliance for Health Reform\, and is made possible through funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

SUMMARY:Webinar on costs of hospital procedures
DESCRIPTION:Late-breaking opportunity!\nA special HHS press call will focus on the costs of hospital procedures. Following that briefing\, join us for a webinar on understanding and using the data behind those costs. \nInstructors include: \n\n\nJonathan Blum\, acting principal deputy administrator\, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services \n\n\nKarl Stark\, AHCJ vice president and Philadelphia Inquirer health editor  \n\n\nThe free webinar is 2-3 p.m. ET\, Wednesday\, May 8. \nRegister now and obtain the webinar link at https://www3.gotomeeting.com/register/275022694 \nQuestions? Call CMS press line at 202-690-6145. \n\nMore on medical costs\nThe cost of medicines\, devices\, tests and treatment is such an important element of health reporting that it is included in AHCJ’s Statement of Principles: “Strive to include information about cost and insurance coverage in any reporting of new ideas in medicine.” \nBrenda Goodman\, AHCJ’s topic leader on covering medical studies says that the runaway costs of such things are arguably one of the most important issues in medicine\, but it’s one that’s often missing from health stories. \nMichael Schroeder\, who covers health for Angie’s List Magazine\, is required to include meaningful medical pricing information in his stories. He acknowledges this is no simple task but urges reporters to have a strategy and be persistent. “You won’t always get the information you’re after\, but your batting average will certainly go up\, and you won’t be left to routinely settle for hollow numbers.” \nTo that end\, Goodman and Schroeder have contributed tip sheets to help reporters get that vital information. Goodman focuses on several resources where you might find pricing information\, while Schroeder shares his strategy and the specific questions he asks sources about costs.

A draft agenda will be posted soon. \nThe webinar will be May 7\, 1:30-3 p.m. EDT. \nSpeakers: \n\n\nRosemarie Day\, Day Health Strategies & McKinsey’s Center for U.S. Health System Reform \n\n\nLourdes Grindal-Miller\, acting director\, Division of Plan Management\, CCIIO \n\n\nMandy Cohen\, senior technical adviser\, CMS \n\n\nScott Keefer\, vice president\, policy and legislative affairs\, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota

SUMMARY:SF Bay Area Chapter - State health law implementation: Race to the starting line
DESCRIPTION:Please join the San Francisco chapter of the Association of Health Care Journalists and the nonpartisan Alliance for Health Reform for a special event on Tuesday\, April 23. \nFormer California Medicaid Director Stan Rosenstein\, the Kaiser Family Foundation’s Larry Levitt\, and workforce expert Susan Chapman will address the complex issues that California faces this year leading up to major 2014 health law changes. \nDate: Tuesday\, April 23 \nTime: 6:30-8:30pm (refreshments available at 6:30\, program begins at 7.) \nLocation: San Francisco Chronicle – North Beach conference room (901 Mission St.\, San Francisco)***Bring photo ID and check in at reception desk. (The Chronicle is near BART and parking garages are nearby) \nRSVP to Colleen Paretty at BayAreaAHCJ@gmail.com \nThis event is sponsored by AHCJ\, the Alliance for Health Reform and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. \nPanelists: \n\nStan Rosenstein\, principal advisor\, Health Management Associates\, and former California Medicaid director\, will talk about the state’s plan to expand Medicaid.\nLarry Levitt\, senior vice president for special initiatives at the Kaiser Family Foundation\, and executive director\, Kaiser Initiative on Health Reform and Private Insurance\, will discuss the major insurance changes coming in 2014\, and how exchanges will work.\nSusan Chapman\, associate professor\, UCSF School of Nursing\, and research faculty\, UCSF Center for the Health Professions\, will address the medical professional workforce challenges associated with the coverage expansions.\nKelley Weiss\, broadcast reporter\, CHCF Center for Health Reporting\, Sacramento\, will suggest story ideas and tips on writing about the health law changes.\n\nModerator: Marilyn Werber Serafini\, communications director and health policy advisor\, the Alliance for Health Reform\, a nonpartisan\, nonprofit health policy group in Washington\, DC \nLess than a year from now\, states must be ready to enroll millions of people in insurance exchanges\, as outlined in the 2010 health care overhaul law. Or\, the federal government will step in to do the job\, or part of it. States also have the option of opening their Medicaid programs to millions of new participants. But that’s not much time\, considering their long to-do lists. \n At least half a dozen Republican governors had delayed implementation efforts in hopes that the Supreme Court would rule the law unconstitutional\, or that Gov. Mitt Romney would win the November election and repeal the law. Neither happened\, but even if they decide now to run their own exchanges\, it will be difficult for those states – and some others – to be ready in time\, say health care experts. \nCalifornia is planning to operate a state insurance exchange\, and also is moving ahead with a Medicaid expansion. Also\, the state will soon partner with the federal government to coordinate care for nearly half a million people who quality for both Medicare and Medicaid.   \nWill California be ready to begin enrolling people this fall? Will hospitals and insurers be ready in time? Will people with changing economic situations bounce between Medicaid and subsidized private insurance\, and will they have gaps in coverage? Will people know what kind of insurance to sign up for\, and how to do it? Will there be a shortage of physicians and other medical providers? \nThis briefing will help you answer these questions for your readers\, viewers and listeners.
