SUMMARY:Webinar: What Do Consumers Need to Know About Health Reform's Changes?
DESCRIPTION:As part of its Media Fellowships Program\, the Kaiser Family Foundation is organizing a series of interactive webinars exclusively for journalists to address key aspects of the 2010 Affordable Care Act\, the implications for consumers\, and strategies for connecting the dots for different audiences. \nThe first webinar will take place from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday\, August 28\, and will be an overview of how health reform’s impact will vary for people in different circumstances\, including those currently with employer coverage\, those who buy their own insurance and those who are currently uninsured. Foundation State Health Policy Director Jennifer Tolbert and Senior Fellow Karen Pollitz will explain the law’s individual mandate requiring most Americans to obtain coverage\, as well as the law’s new coverage options\, including new state insurance marketplaces\, subsidies for people with low- and moderate incomes\, and new rules prohibiting insurers from discriminating based on pre-existing conditions. They will answer journalists’ questions about the law as part of the webinar. \nRegister for the August 28 webinar. \nShortly after registering\, each participant will receive a confirmation email that contains information about how to join the webinar. \nIf you are unable to attend the first webinar\, but would like to receive all future updates on the series\, please email your name and media affiliation to acawebinars@kff.org. You can also use this email to provide feedback and ideas for the series. Throughout the Foundation’s ACA webinar series\, participants are welcome to continue the conversation on Twitter with the hashtag #ACA101KFF. \nThe “Covering Health Reform” series will continue on Sept. 10\, with a webinar focused on the premiums and tax subsidies available for insurance purchased through the new state insurance marketplaces and how that will affect the cost of coverage. Another scheduled webinar will focus on the cost and implications of states’ decisions on whether or not to expand their Medicaid programs under the law on Oct. 8. The series will also select emerging issues as topics for webinars based on feedback from participants and other interested media members. \nContact:\nVictoria Chao(650) 854-9400acawebinars@kff.org

SUMMARY:Live webcast: Are federal public affairs offices a help or hindrance to journalists?
DESCRIPTION:The National Press Club plans to webcast live a debate Monday evening over whether federal public affairs offices are crimping the flow of information about the U.S. government. \n\nThe event\, co-sponsored by the Club’s Press Freedom Committee and the Young Members Committee\, can be viewed live here. It is expected to be broadcast live on CSPAN 2; tune in on Monday at 6.30 p.m. Eastern time \nPublic affairs offices increasingly require that reporters conduct all interviews through the press office. U.S. departments and agencies often mandate or strongly suggest that their employees talk to reporters only through official channels and with communications staff present. \nPublic affairs professionals believe these controls are necessary to ensure that the press gets accurate information and the department or agency’s message is unified and coherent. \nThe event will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Aug. 12 in the Club’s conference rooms. \nClick here to register. \nThe panel will be moderated by John M. Donnelly\, chairman of the NPC Press Freedom Committee and a senior writer with CQ Roll Call. and the group includes: \nTony Fratto\, managing partner at Hamilton Place Strategies\, a strategic communications and crisis management consultancy\, an on-air contributor on the CNBC Business News Network\, and formerly deputy assistant to President George W. Bush and principal deputy press secretary; \nJohn Verrico\, president-elect of the National Association of Government Communicators; \nLinda Petersen\, managing editor\, The Valley Journals of Salt Lake\, freedom of information chair for the Society of Professional Journalists\, and president of the Utah Foundation for Open Government; \nCarolyn Carlson\, former Associated Press reporter\, assistant professor of communication at Kennesaw State University near Atlanta\, and author of two surveys on the relationship between public affairs staff and the press\, and \nKathryn Foxhall\, an AHCJ member and freelance reporter who has extensively researched the issue. \nFor additional information\, contact John M. Donnelly\, NPC Press Freedom Committee chairman at jdonnelly@cq.com.

SUMMARY:Webcast: Aging and end-of-life care
DESCRIPTION:Reporting on end-of-life issues can be touchy for everyone involved and journalists need to handle issues of death and dying with sensitivity and skill. Understanding the processes\, both clinical and legal\, the nuances\, and methods to manage such emotional issues with patients\, families\, and care providers\, will result in more effective and powerful stories.  \nSharpen your reporting skills and learn more about treatment decision making\, health care near the end of life\, hospice and palliative care and ethical issues that accompany them. \n<!– \nJoin us for a webcast on Wednesday Aug. 7 at 8 a.m. PDT/11 a.m. EDT. Send questions in advance to liz@healthjournalism.org. \nThis event is exclusively for AHCJ members. We encourage you to log in to the website a few minutes early. We will be using Adobe Connect software that may require that your browser download a quick add-on to view the webcast. \n–> \n»» Click here to watch the recorded webcast.\nOur expert panel includes:\n\n\n\n\nV.J. Periyakoil\, M.D.\, is director of Palliative Care Education and Training at Stanford University\, director of the Stanford University Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program\, Stanford University\, director of the VA Interprofessional Fellowship in Palliative Care\, at the VA’s Palo Alto Health Care System and associate director of Palliative Care Services at VA Palo Alto Health Care System. She will talk about cross-cultural health issues that arise in working with patients and families. \nHer paper\, “Multicultural Long-Term Care Nurses’ Perceptions of Factors Influencing Patient Dignity at the End of Life\,” is available to AHCJ members. \n\n\n\n\nNancy Berlinger\, Ph.D\, is a research scholar at The Hastings Center and an author on end-of-life care. Her interests include treatment decision-making and care near the end of life; ethical issues in the management of chronic illnesses; access to health care for undocumented immigrants and migrant workers; and the ethics of workarounds and other practices for managing problems of safety and harm in health care systems. \nBerlinger directed The Hastings Center project that produced the revised and expanded second edition of the Guidelines for Decisions on Life-Sustaining Treatment and Care Near the End of Life. Journalists can get a review copy of the guidelines by contacting Susan Gilbert at the Hastings Center at gilberts@thehastingscenter.org or 845-424-4040 x244. \n\n\n\n\nLisa Krieger is a San Jose Mercury News health reporter whose multi-part series on death and dying chronicled her personal experiences with the process. At the center of Krieger’s unflinching account of her father’s last days is an uncomfortable question: “Just because it’s possible to prolong a life\, should we?” Her articles\, which won an AHCJ Award of Excellence in Health Care Journalism\, brought an outpouring of reaction from readers\, demonstrating that reporters can sometimes tell the story from an unusual perspective and touch readers in a different way than would be possible with more traditional coverage. \n\n\n\n\nLiz Seegert\, AHCJ’s topic leader on aging will moderate. Seegert writes blog posts\, assigns and edits tip sheets and articles and gathers resources to help AHCJ members cover the many issues around our aging society. Her reporting and writing background spans more than 25 years in print\, broadcast\, and digital media\, covering an array of consumer and professional health topics\, including wellness/prevention\, chronic disease management\, women’s health\, aging\, health policy and health IT.

SUMMARY:ICFJ Contest for Best Coverage of Infectious Diseases
DESCRIPTION:Journalists from the United States\, Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa can win international reporting trips worth up to $10\,000 for submitting the best stories on infectious diseases. \nStories can address diseases including AIDS\, tuberculosis and malaria. These three diseases alone are the leading causes of death in low- and middle-income countries. They claim nearly 4 million lives every year and cost billions of dollars in lost productivity. The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) is launching the story contest to spur discussion about how the global community deals with these critical health issues.  \nStories published or broadcast between May 20 and Sept. 1\, 2013\, will qualify. The deadline for submitting stories is Sept. 1\, 2013. Along with the story submission\, participants must include a 300-word proposal for an international reporting trip to expand their coverage of infectious diseases. \nThe International Center for Journalists will select three winners\, one from each region. An editor/manager of the winners’ media outlets also will win a trip to Washington\, D.C.\, to attend ICFJ’s 2013 Awards Dinner on Nov. 7\, 2013. The Africa contest is administered in partnership with the African Health Journalists Association. \nWinners will be contacted on Oct. 1. \nStories must be in English or French and cover diseases such as HIV/AIDS\, malaria and tuberculosis. \nPossible topics include: \n• Government policies and programs that address infectious diseases \n• Effectiveness of donor-funded infectious-diseases programs \n• The state of funding for the delivery\, treatment and research of infectious diseases \n• Journalists working in each region for print\, broadcast or online media qualify. The contest also is open to freelance journalists whose stories are published or broadcast by Sept. 1\, 2013. \nPlease tweet about the stories you submit using the hashtag #icfjhealth. \n

SUMMARY:Symposium on Sustainable U.S. Health Spending: Public Sector Imperative\, Private Sector Urgency
DESCRIPTION:The record run of historically slow growth in national health expenditures has not made unsustainable health spending suddenly sustainable. In previous research\, we have quantified sustainable health spending to better understand its underlying dynamics.   \nWith the Affordable Care Act approaching full implementation it is especially timely to further analyze cost factors\, distinguishing private and public sector growth trajectories. This half-day symposium will explicitly connect health spending growth to the long-run U.S. fiscal crisis by including both health economic and budget experts. \nWhat do the most recent data show for health spending growth? What has been the effect of the recession and tepid recovery\, and what does this portend for future growth? SUMMARY:“The _____ (Doctor/Nurse/Other) Will See You Now”: Rethinking Scope of Practice
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will give you the latest on a flurry of state legislation to allow nurses\, nurse practitioners and other medical providers to do more to care for patients. \nMore than 25 million people are expected to gain insurance coverage through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act\, increasing the demand for care. At the same time\, the Association of American Medical Colleges has projected a shortage of 90\,000 physicians over the next ten years. \nLegislative proposals in states throughout the country would rethink the role of nurses\, nurse practitioners\, pharmacists and other medical providers in caring for patients. In some states\, nurse practitioners already can practice independently\, without the supervision of a physician. \n\n\nKavita Patel\, managing director for clinical transformation and delivery at the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform at the Brookings Institution\, and a former Obama administration official\, will provide an overview of state activity and trends. \n\n\nGeraldine “Polly” Bednash\, executive director of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing\, will talk about the qualifications of nurses and nurse practitioners to care for patients in ways beyond what many states allow. \n\n\nReid Blackwelder\, a Tennessee family physician and president-elect of the American Academy of Family Physicians\, will discuss for the importance of sorting out the roles of physicians\, nurses and other medical providers in the new team-based care environment. \n\n\nMarilyn Werber Serafini of the Alliance will moderate the discussion. \n\n\nWHEN:  Wednesday\, July 17\, 1-2:30 p.m. \nRegister and submit questions in advance. After you register\, you’ll get an email with a link for the webinar. \nContact: (202)789-2300 mserafini@allhealth.org. \nThe event is sponsored by the nonpartisan Alliance for Health Reform and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

SUMMARY:Shifting Challenges: Mental Health in the ACA Era
DESCRIPTION:Provisions of the 2010 health reform law\, combined with mental health parity legislation\, promise to make mental health care available to millions more Americans in 2014 through both private insurance and Medicaid. But\, the sweeping changes that these laws make to financing for mental health care will require states\, mental health providers\, private insurers and patients to make major adjustments. As more people gain coverage\, mental health experts fear that access to care could become an issue\, and members of Congress already are introducing legislation to address this concern.  \nWill the workforce be sufficient to serve the needs of all the newly enrolled? Will states need to expand the capacity of their mental health centers\, and how will changes in funding streams affect their ability to do so? How are states adapting to new federal insurance subsidies and potential matching revenue? Are community mental health centers prepared to bill Medicaid and insurance companies? What will the mental health care needs of the newly insured population be\, and can providing mental health care to that population reduce their total health care costs or increase their productivity? Are there further benefits when mental health care is integrated with primary care\, and what opportunities or challenges do the new laws create for integration? \nA distinguished panel of experts will address these and related questions.  \n\n\nTed Lutterman\, senior director of government and commercial research at the state mental health directors’ research institute\, will give an overview of the complex web of payers\, providers\, and patients that comprise the U.S. mental health care system and explain how parts of the system are adapting to this new era. \n\n\nJohn O’Brien\, senior policy advisor for the Disabled and Elderly Health Programs Group at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)\, will outline the effects that the new laws have had on CMS’ priorities for mental health care and offer results from their demonstration projects. \n\n\nLinda Rosenberg\, president and CEO of the National Coalition for Behavioral Healthcare\, will give a national perspective of the effects that new laws are having on the mental health care system\, and examine some of the challenges that remain. \n\n\nKarl Wilson\, former CEO of Crider Community Mental Health Center and Crider FQHC in Missouri\, will offer an on-the-ground perspective of the changes occurring in the U.S. mental health system\, and specifically about Missouri’s integration of mental health and primary care.  \n\n\nEd Howard of the Alliance and Andrew Hyman of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will co-moderate. \n\n\nThe event is sponsored by the nonpartisan Alliance for Health Reform and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. \nWHEN:  Tuesday\, July 2\, 12:15 PM to 2:00 PM (Lunch available at noon)  \nWHERE: Room G-50\, Dirksen Senate Office Building \nRSVP by noon on Monday\, July 1\, by using this form or call 202-789-2300.   \nC-SPAN will broadcast the briefing live. You can watch on C-SPAN TV or at http://www.c-span.org/Live-Video/C-SPAN/. You can also listen on C-SPAN radio (90.1 FM in Washington\, DC).

SUMMARY:Philadelphia Chapter — State health law implementation: Race to the starting line
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Philadelphia chapter of the Association of Health Care Journalists on Tuesday\, June 18 for a special event to explore the challenges that Pennsylvania and New Jersey face this year leading up to the 2014 health law changes. \nDate: June 18 \nTime: 6 p.m. beer/wine and appetizers\, 6:30-8 p.m. briefing \nLocation: Philadelphia Inquirer Public Room (801 Market St. #300). Parking is across the street\, at 8th and Market. \nThis year the giant health law begins to move into its most climactic phase. Tens of millions of people are about to get health insurance\, and this meeting will help reporters understand the epic challenges ahead. The health law requires that everyone carry insurance by 2014\, and new\, online exchanges are meant to help individuals and small businesses obtain coverage. About half of states – including Pennsylvania and New Jersey – are leaving the creation and operation of the exchanges to the federal government. Insurers have begun to submit plan types and proposed premiums to federal regulators\, and details are expected to be publicly announced by August. Enrollment is planned to start in October with the first plans going live in January\, 2014. \nYet another big change is the expansion of Medicaid\, which states can accept or reject. New Jersey has chosen to expand its program\, while Pennsylvania will not. \nThese developments mark the biggest changes in health insurance in more than a generation and will raise many questions. How will federal insurance exchanges work? Will they even get off the ground by the Oct. 1 deadline? Will people know how to enroll? Will the plans be affordable? Without the Medicaid expansion\, many of Pennsylvania’s estimated 1.4 million uninsured may be unable to participate. What does this mean for them and for the financial health of hospitals? With so many more people covered in both states\, will there be a shortage of physicians\, as many experts expect? \nThis briefing will help you answer these questions for your readers\, viewers and listeners. \nPanelists: \n\n\nKaren Pollitz\, senior fellow at the Kaiser Family Foundation and former Obama administration official \n\n\nGerald Katz\, owner\, Healthcare Management Consulting \n\n\nUwe Reinhardt\, professor of economics and public affairs at Princeton University \n\n\nKarl Stark\, health editor of The Philadelphia Inquirer \n\n\nModerator: Marilyn Werber Serafini\, communications director and health policy advisor at the Alliance for Health Reform\, a nonpartisan\, nonprofit health policy group in Washington\, DC \nPlease RSVP to Marilyn Serafini 240-401-3514 mserafini@allhealth.org \nThis briefing is sponsored by AHCJ\, the Alliance for Health Reform and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

SUMMARY:Chicago chapter: Changing Costs and Care at the End of Life
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of the “death panels” controversy that demonized efforts to compensate physicians for conversations with patients\, there is a growing movement to improve end of life care. Billions of dollars are spent annually on Medicare patients for care delivered in the final months of their lives\, much of it unnecessary\, painful\, duplicative and unwanted. \nStudies have shown that earlier use of palliative and hospice care and advance care planning can not only improve the quality of life and care\, but also lengthen lifespan\, improve patient satisfaction and cut costs. This panel will discuss how hospitals\, physicians and advocates are working with patients to improve end of life care. \nModerator: Mark Taylor\, independent journalist \nPanelists: \n\n\nFormer WGN producer and reporter Randi Belisomo\, co-founder of Life Matters Media \n\n\nNorthwestern University oncologist Mary Mulcahy\, M.D.\, co-founder of Life Matters Media \n\n\nJulie Goldstein\, M.D.\, a palliative care physician  \n\n\nMartha Twaddle\, M.D.\, nationally recognized expert on end of life care and the medical director of the Midwest Palliative and Hospice CareCenter \n\n\nModerator: Mark Taylor\, independent journalist \nPanelists:Former WGN producer and reporter Randi Belisomo and co-founder of Life Matters MediaNorthwestern University oncologist Mary Mulcahy\, M.D. and co-founder of Life Matters MediaJulie Goldstein\, M.D.\, a palliative care physician  \nTime: 6 p.m. refreshments\, 6:30 p.m. program \nLocation: \nColumbia College Journalism Department33 East Congress\, corner of Wabash and Congress\, under the L tracksRoom 219 \nThanks to Columbia College for the venue! \nRSVP to ahcj_chicago@mac.com
