SUMMARY:Webcast: How will rural Americans tap into the insurance marketplaces?
DESCRIPTION:A recording of this webcast is now available.\n\nSpeakers’ PowerPoints:• Al Cross• Alan Morgan• Jim Doyle \n\nIn the launch of health insurance exchanges across the country\, one issue that has not been explored much is how the marketplaces will affect rural Americans. AHCJ will sponsor a webcast on this topic on Thursday\, Oct. 17\, at 2 p.m. Eastern. \nAbout rural Americans and insurance\nNearly one in five uninsured Americans live in rural areas\, and a greater proportion of rural residents lacks health insurance compared with the proportion of urban residents without health care coverage. One of the goals of the Affordable Care Act is to help make health insurance coverage affordable and accessible for the approximately 60 million Americans who live in rural areas. The federal Department of Health and Human Services has said the health insurance marketplaces will help to lower costs by increasing competition\, especially in the 29 mostly rural states where a single insurer currently dominates more than half of the health insurance market. \nWhether the ACA does in fact lower costs by increasing competition remains to be seen\, but lower costs is a significant goal given that studies show that one in five U.S. farmers faces medical debt and\, on average\, families pay about half of their health care costs out-of-pocket\, HHS said. \nSpeakers\nThe panelists will be Al Cross\, director of the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues at the University of Kentucky; Alan Morgan\, CEO of the National Rural Health Association; and Jim Doyle\, who covers the business of health care for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. AHCJ health insurance topic leader Joseph Burns will serve as moderator. \nResources\nSmall Area Health Insurance Estimates (SAHIE) \nAl Cross \nAlan Morgan \nJim Doyle \nJoseph Burns

SUMMARY:AHCJ San Francisco chapter: Mental health matters
DESCRIPTION:Are you a health reporter who regularly writes about mental health? Or maybe you’re looking to add this important area to your beat? Join us for a workshop and perspectives from two veteran health journalists. \nDate: Thursday\, Oct 17\, 2013 \nTime: 6-8 p.m. (light refreshments and networking 6-6:30 p.m.; program begins at 6:30 p.m.) \nLocation: San Francisco Chronicle – North Beach conference room (901 Mission St.\, San Francisco)Bring a photo ID and check in at reception desk. The Chronicle is near BART\, and parking garages are nearby.  \n***Please RSVP (BayAreaAHCJ@gmail.com). \nThis event is free. \nBackground: \nDespite the impression left by many news headlines\, most people with a mental illness don’t commit crimes. But because mental health issues are largely underreported except when violence is involved\, readers are left with an incomplete picture of just how many people deal with such health problems or that those problems are treatable. Did you know that 25% of American adults have a mental health disorder in any given year? \nThis workshop explores stigmas\, stereotypes\, and facts about mental health\, and covers sources\, precision\, relevance\, language\, cultural considerations and many other issues that can help reporters and editors tell more complete stories. \nThere’s never been a more pressing need for robust reporting about mental health. This workshop can provide you with some tools for telling that story accurately. \nFollowing the workshop\, a health journalist with experience reporting on mental health will share some of her insights. Q&A will close the evening. \nSpeakers: \nMelissa McCoy will lead the workshop. She is a media consultant to the TEAM Up project and former deputy managing editor of the Los Angeles Times. She was an ethics fellow at the Poynter Institute and has served as an editing and ethics instructor at the Maynard Institute. TEAM Up (tools for entertainment and media) is a project of the nonprofit Entertainment Industries Council designed to share information about mental health with journalists.  \nKatherine Kam is a San Francisco Bay Area journalist who specializes in health reporting. In 2012\, she received a Rosalynn Carter Mental Health Journalism Fellowship\, which helped fund her three-part series on depression and suicide in Asian-American high school and college students. \nPlease join us for this important and compelling event.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Coordinating Public Sector Health Care Purchasing
DESCRIPTION:Sept. 24\, 9:30-10:30 a.m. PT \n\nImplementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) puts three of California’s largest public purchasers of health care services — Covered California (California’s ACA-compliant health benefit marketplace)\, the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS)\, and the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) — in a stronger position to coordinate their buying power. \nStates have long been interested in this type of alignment\, hoping that enhanced market leverage would lead to lower costs and better health care quality. But few such efforts have been sustained. State government bodies are often reluctant to coordinate with one another without a mandate to do so\, and the regular turnover in governmental leadership can stymie progress. State purchasers also differ significantly in their missions\, covered populations and services\, and contractors\, further complicating alignment. \nDespite these challenges\, some states have effectively coordinated purchasing efforts\, and in the case of Minnesota\, sustained that activity over time. Learn how California state entities can leverage their purchasing power to influence health care cost and value from Michael Bailit\, MBA\, president of Bailit Health Purchasing and author of the new CHCF report\, “All Together Now: Coordinating California’s Public Sector Health Care Purchasing.” \nRegister now for this webinar. The webinar is open to all interested participants.
