SUMMARY:Follow the Money: Fraud and the Affordable Care Act
DESCRIPTION:“Follow the Money: Fraud and the Affordable Care Act” is a workshop designed to teach participants where to look for fraud connected to the massive new government program\, how to uncover it\, and how to present the findings in a compelling and understandable way. \nObamacare is destined to be THE major story of 2014 and one of the major issues of the mid-term elections. With trillions of taxpayer dollars at stake\, it’s imperative for journalists to approach this topic with a watchdog mentality. Understanding where fraud might occur and how to uncover it within a very complex program requires specialized training. Reporters need to understand how insurance companies can manipulate the system for their own benefit\, how individuals can scam the system\, the limitations of government oversight\, which documents will be crucial to investigating fraud in the program\, how to analyze documents\, and much more.   \nThe program is sponsored by The New England Center for Investigative Reporting\, a nonprofit news site dedicated to watchdog journalism. It will feature the following faculty members: \n\n\nDavid Donald is data editor at the Center for Public Integrity. \n\n\nByron Harris has been a news reporter for more than four decades\, primarily with WFAA-Dallas. \n\n\nAl Tompkins is the Poynter Institute’s senior faculty for broadcasting and online. \n\n\nFred Schulte is a senior reporter at the Center for Public Integrity. \n\n\nLouis Saccoccio is CEO of the National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association. \n\n\nIt will be held at Boston University.  \nThe cost of the program is generously covered by a grant from The McCormick Foundation. Hotels\, airfare\, meals and tuition will be covered by the grant. Incidentals and spending money are not covered. \nThe application is only open to journalists reporting within the United States. Click here to apply by April 15. \nTo participate in this training you’ll need to secure an agreement from your editor that he/she will meet with you after the workshop to discuss a plan for coverage of fraud associated with the Affordable Care Act.

SUMMARY:Getting dental care to elders in nursing homes
DESCRIPTION:Archived recording\nSee a recording of this webcast. \nSpeakers’ presentations\nJudith Jones\, D.D.S. \nGregory J. Folse\, D.D.S. \nBeth Truett \nResources\nState of Decay: A national report card on the oral health of elders from Oral Health America \nTooth Wisdom: Oral health resources for seniors from Oral Health America \nSpecial Care Dentistry Association \nADA resource covers use of incurred medical expense option to cover dental care costs \nOral Health: Resources in AHCJ’s core topic area \n\nNoon ET\, May 15Although more national research is needed to understand the full extent of the problem\, studies show that seniors in nursing homes often go without dental care. \nThe lack of care can take a devastating toll on health and quality of life and impacts seniors who have their natural teeth as well as those who don’t. Our panel of experts will take a look at the need for oral health services in nursing homes and some steps that are being taken to get this care to patients. \nThe speakers \n\n\nAs president of Outreach Dentistry\, Gregory J. Folse\, D.D.S.\, maintains a mobile\, geriatric dental practice in Lafayette\, Louisiana\, a comprehensive school-based dental practice throughout Louisiana\, and lectures extensively. Nationally\, he was instrumental in writing the oral health section of the Minimum Data Set found in every facility residents’ chart\, training state nursing facility surveyors through CMS and trained the Gold Standard Nurses for facility oral health compliance. \n\n\nJudith Jones\, D.D.S.\, is a spokesperson for the American Dental Association\, a member of the national Elder Care Advisory committee and serves on the Journal of the American Dental Association editorial board and on the American Board of Dental Public Health. She is professor and assistant dean for faculty development and director of the Center for Clinical Research at the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. She has organized and led conferences focused on disparities in access to and outcomes of care for elders. Her research interests include geriatric oral health and the relationships between systemic health\, oral health and quality of life. \n\n\nBeth Truett is president and chief executive officer of Oral Health America. Last fall\, Oral Health America\, a national non-profit organization\, released a national report card on the oral health of elders called State of Decay  that highlighted serious needs in many states. Truett will offer insights about the barriers many seniors face to getting dental care both at home and in institutions\, as well as the health impacts that can result from a lack of dental care. \n\n\nMary Otto\, AHCJ’s core topic leader on oral health\, will moderate the discussion and take questions from participants. \n\n\n \n<!– \nThis will be an event exclusively for AHCJ members so you will need your username and password for the website. SUMMARY:Chicago AHCJ Chapter: Overtesting and overtreatment in American medicine
DESCRIPTION:With enrollment in Affordable Care Act insurance plans now at 8 million and another 4.8 million signing up for Medicaid or CHIP\, a new group of patients will be facing hard conversations with physicians and others about what care they should be receiving. \nFrom heated debates over preventive screenings such as mammograms or prostate cancer testing to wasteful use of high-cost imaging or emergency care\, the pressure will be on to rein in unnecessary\, redundant or ineffective care that’s been estimated to gobble between 20 percent to 40 percent of U.S. health spending. This will especially be the case because cost control is key to ensuring that the bill for Obamacare is\, in fact\, affordable. \nOur panel discussion will examine one widely touted effort targeting overtesting and overtreatment\, the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation’s Choosing Wisely initiative. So far\, more than 50 medical societies have offered up more than 200 tests\, treatments and other interventions that “physicians and patients should question.” We’ll look at how well the project is going\, what kind of results it’s getting\, and whether this can indeed be a game-changer in reining in wasteful health care spending. We’ll also discuss the role that Obamacare experiments such as accountable care organizations and patient-centered medical homes may play in slashing unneeded tests and treatments. \nPanelists: \n\nDr. Holly J. Humphrey is the dean for medical education at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and is vice chair ABIM Foundation’s board of trustees.\nDr. Joel Shalowitz is the director of health industry management at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management and also professor of preventive medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine.\nMark Newton is CEO of Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago’s Albany Park neighborhood. Swedish has received four consecutive “A” grades on patient safety from the Leapfrog Group\, and is taking part in accountable care activities in the Medicare and Medicaid programs.\nJulie Deardorff is an award-winning health\, medicine and fitness reporter for the Chicago Tribune.\nKevin B. O’Reilly (moderator)\, senior editor\, CAP TODAY\, published the College of American Pathologists\, and member of the Association of Health Care Journalists.\n\nTime: 6 p.m.\, refreshments7 p.m.\, program \nLocation: Columbia College Journalism Department33 East Congress\, corner of Wabash and Congress\, under the L tracksRoom 219 \nThanks to Columbia College for the venue!
