SUMMARY:The psychology of poverty
DESCRIPTION:How does poverty affect health decisions? Poverty affects every aspect of life and has particularly bad repercussions on human health. The stress of poverty has detrimental effects on the body — and especially the brain. \nScientists have begun to discover that poverty takes its toll on health starting at an early age. Scientists are also making efforts to find the best way to help reverse or eradicate poverty’s health effects. Could education about basic health and nutrition for low-income populations help? Could cash transfers improve some of the health problems that result from poverty? \nTo learn more about psychology of poverty and which interventions work best to thwart the cycle\, join a live online event. Participants include: \nJoe Rojas-Burke (moderator): Independent journalist and author of “The challenge of writing about people in poverty” \nJames Redford: Director of Paper Tigers \nLaura Gottlieb\, M.D.\, M.P.H.: Center for Health and Community at University of California\, San Francisco \nJohannes Haushofer: Postdoctorate at MIT’s Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab \nTeri Barila and Mark Brown: Children’s Resilience Initiative \nDate & time:July 8\, 12 p.m. ET

SUMMARY:Rates of Change: Putting 2015 Insurance Premiums into Context
DESCRIPTION:Rates of Change: Putting 2015 Insurance Premiums into Context will air live on C-SPAN 2 at 12:00 PM ET. \nHealth insurance premiums have been one of the most closely-watched features of the new health insurance marketplaces. In 2014\, insurers set rates based on limited data about who would sign up for coverage. Round II of open enrollment is fast approaching\, allowing little time to process the first year’s data and to prepare for tomorrow. For 2015\, some analysts anticipate increases of 10 percent or less\, while others forecast growth of 20 percent or more. \nWherever these numbers ultimately land\, they are likely to vary from state to state\, with different effects on consumers\, providers\, insurers and the federal budget. This briefing will focus on factors influencing insurance premiums\, state and federal regulatory roles in reviewing rates\, and what to expect in 2015. A distinguished panel of experts will examine these and related issues. \nJonathan Gruber\, professor of economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, will provide an historical context for today’s rate increases\, identifying salient trends in premium setting before and after the passage of the Affordable Care Act. \nCori Uccello\, actuary and senior health fellow at the American Academy of Actuaries\, will identify the dominant factors that influence the rate-setting process in private insurance and address how those factors have translated into the new online exchanges. \nDavid Cusano\, senior research fellow at the Center on Health Insurance Reforms at the Georgetown University Health Policy Institute\, will address state and federal rate review programs\, and examine variability in approaches to transparency and review of the rate-setting process. \nElizabeth Hall\, vice president for federal affairs at WellPoint\, will share a private insurer’s perspective on the challenges of providing and pricing health coverage in new markets with significant regulatory variation and limited claims data. \nEd Howard of the Alliance and Rachel Nuzum of Commonwealth will co-moderate. \nContact: Sarah Dash (202)789-2300; sarahdash@allhealth.org \nWatch live on C-SPAN 2 at 12:00 PM ET \nFollow the Briefing on Twitter: #Rates2015 \nThe event is sponsored by the nonpartisan Alliance for Health Reform and The Commonwealth Fund.

SUMMARY:NYC Chapter: Mining ACA data for stories
DESCRIPTION:KatherineHempstead \nLooking for new angles on the Affordable Care Act? The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will discuss the highlights of six databases on the law in an exclusive briefing for AHCJ members. The session will be led by RWJF’s Katherine Hempstead\, a rare data maven who spices her presentation with energy and humor. \nThe databases can answer many questions\, such as whether consumers are having trouble paying their sky-high deductibles or whether waiting lines are growing at doctors’ offices. Want to know how your state exchange differs from others? RWJF can help. Hempstead will also offer ideas for stories that can be mined from the data no matter your technical abilities. This is a can’t-miss event for journalists covering health care. \nPlease RSVP to Trudy Lieberman at trudy.lieberman@gmail.com \nJune 19\, 6-7:30 p.m.  \nLocation:New York Health Foundation1385 Broadway (between 37th and 38th) in New York City.Phone: 212-664-7656 \nLinks and more background can be found on RWJF’s ACA data page. Daily developments are at #ACAnumbers on Twitter. \nReform by the Numbers Datasets\nAs part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s efforts to monitor the impact of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on coverage\, utilization and affordability\, we are working with a number of organizations to acquire and analyze timely and unique data. We have developed a website\, entitled Reform by the Numbers\, which will house downloadable data\, tables and graphs\, in addition to policy briefs\, blogs and other content that highlights key findings. The datasets and resources housed on the website are described below: \nEnrollment and Carrier Data \nThe National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) maintains an insurance database compiled from annual and quarterly financial statements of approximately 5\,000 insurance companies. NAIC is providing quarterly data of carrier reports that describe size and characteristics of group and individual markets. The annual version of the data will provide state breakdowns by quarter by carrier. Data will include\, in part\, information on the number of policies\, federal and state taxes\, health premiums\, and incurred claims. \nHospital ACA Monitoring Project \nThe New Jersey Hospital Association and Premier\, Inc. are managing collaborations of over 20 state hospital associations where each association will be providing quarterly discharge data. Data from other states is being submitted by Premier Inc. These data include total inpatient admissions and emergency department visits by payer\, as well as a number of select diagnoses and procedures likely to be sensitive to insurance. \nHealth Reform Monitoring Survey \nThe Urban Institute has launched the Health Reform Monitoring Survey (HRMS)\, a quarterly survey of non-elderly adults that examine health insurance coverage\, health care access and affordability\, and health status. Starting with the second quarter of 2013\, each round of the HRMS will include supplemental questions on particular coverage-related issues. \nHIX 2.0 \nThe Health Insurance Exchange Research Group at The Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania\, along with collaborators at other institutions\, has developed data detailing variation in governance and structure of ACA implementation across the 50 states. The data sets provide information in analytical formats on each state’s key implementation decisions regarding Health Insurance Marketplaces and Medicaid expansion\, among other topics. \nHIX Compare \nBreakaway Policy Strategies has compiled a dataset that details benefit design and cost sharing information for health plans offered in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This dataset will include information on premiums\, network composition\, deductibles\, out-of-pocket limits\, and copayment and coinsurance amounts. \nACA View \nathenahealth\, which provides billing and claims processing software to more than 45\,000 outpatient practices and collects real time data on financial\, operational\, and clinical characteristics of patient encounter\, has developed 35 metrics that monitor trends in appointment wait time\, physician schedule density\, health status of new patients\, patient balances due\, claims processing\, and provider reimbursement. athenahealth will provide these metrics to the foundation on a monthly basis.

SUMMARY:Chicago End-of-Life Care Coalition hosts award-winning journalist and author Katy Butler
DESCRIPTION:Katy Butler\, award-winning journalist and author of “Knocking on Heaven’s Door:  the Path to a Better Way of Death\,” will be leading a discussion on June 19 at Loyola University School of Law\, Power Rogers & Smith Ceremonial Courtroom\, 25 East Pearson Street\, Chicago.  Registration will open at 6 p.m. with the discussion running from 6:30–7:30 p.m.\, followed by a book signing and cocktail reception until 8:30 p.m. \n“Knocking on Heaven’s Door” was named “One of Ten Best Memoirs of 2013” and “A Big Book for fall 2013” by Publishers Weekly. According to Abraham Verghese\, professor and senior associate chairman for the theory and practice of medicine at Stanford University\, and the author of the novel “Cutting for Stone\,” shares that the book “is a thoroughly researched and compelling mix of personal narrative and hard-nosed reporting that captures just how flawed care at the end of life has become. My hope is that this book might goad the public into pressuring their elected representatives to further transform health care from its present crisis-driven\, reimbursement-driven model to one that truly cares for the patient and the family. And since life is\, after all\, a fatal illness and none of us are spared\, there is an urgent need for us in America to reclaim death from medicine and\, whenever possible\, enable the ritual of dying at home with family present (and aided by all medicine can offer) so that we are allowed to take our leave from earth with dignity.” promises to be an engaging discussion! \nTickets for the event are $10. SUMMARY:Briefing: Where you live may decide the kind of care you get when you are older or have disabilities
DESCRIPTION:A new scorecard measures the effects of state policies on the ability to live independently\, from choice of setting\, care quality and affordability\, to support for family caregivers\, and more. \n In just 12 years\, the leading edge of the Baby Boom Generation will enter its 80s\, placing new demands on the long-term care system. \nToday\, more than 90 percent of older people who get help with daily activities rely on the nation’s 42 million family caregivers. This generation\, and those that follow\, will have far fewer potential family caregivers to provide unpaid help. Is America ready? Which states effectively serve and support older Americans and people with disabilities who want to live independently but need help with their daily activities? Which states need to do more for family caregivers and people who need care? Do any states completely meet the long-term care needs of their population? \nWith the support of the nation’s leading organizations promoting a quality long-term care system\, AARP has developed a comprehensive state-by-state long-term care Scorecard. Based on 26 performance indicators within five key dimensions\, this Scorecard assesses each of the 50 states (plus the District of Columbia)\, and ranks them against each other. The State Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) Scorecard will be released at 12:01 a.m. on June 19. \nOn June 18 at 1 p.m. ET\, there will be an embargoed telephone briefing for reporters on LTSS Scorecard with Susan Reinhard\, Senior Vice President for Public Policy\, AARP; Melinda K. Abrams\, Vice President for Health Care Delivery System Reform\, The Commonwealth Fund; and Bruce Chernof\, President and CEO\, The SCAN Foundation. \nTo participate in the telephone press briefing\, receive an embargoed copy of the report\, call-in instructions and access to briefing power point\, please email your contact information (phone and email) and written agreement to the embargo to: Media@aarp.org \nDate and time:June 18\, 1 p.m. ET  \nContact:Nancy Thompson 202-434-2560media@aarp.org

SUMMARY:Follow the Money: Fraud and the Affordable Care Act
DESCRIPTION:“Follow the Money: Fraud and the Affordable Care Act” is a workshop designed to teach participants where to look for fraud connected to the massive new government program\, how to uncover it\, and how to present the findings in a compelling and understandable way. \nObamacare is destined to be THE major story of 2014 and one of the major issues of the mid-term elections. With trillions of taxpayer dollars at stake\, it’s imperative for journalists to approach this topic with a watchdog mentality. Understanding where fraud might occur and how to uncover it within a very complex program requires specialized training. Reporters need to understand how insurance companies can manipulate the system for their own benefit\, how individuals can scam the system\, the limitations of government oversight\, which documents will be crucial to investigating fraud in the program\, how to analyze documents\, and much more.   \nThe program is sponsored by The New England Center for Investigative Reporting\, a nonprofit news site dedicated to watchdog journalism. It will feature the following faculty members: \n\n\nDavid Donald is data editor at the Center for Public Integrity. \n\n\nByron Harris has been a news reporter for more than four decades\, primarily with WFAA-Dallas. \n\n\nAl Tompkins is the Poynter Institute’s senior faculty for broadcasting and online. \n\n\nFred Schulte is a senior reporter at the Center for Public Integrity. \n\n\nLouis Saccoccio is CEO of the National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association. \n\n\nIt will be held at Boston University.  \nThe cost of the program is generously covered by a grant from The McCormick Foundation. Hotels\, airfare\, meals and tuition will be covered by the grant. Incidentals and spending money are not covered. \nThe application is only open to journalists reporting within the United States. Click here to apply by April 15. \nTo participate in this training you’ll need to secure an agreement from your editor that he/she will meet with you after the workshop to discuss a plan for coverage of fraud associated with the Affordable Care Act.
