SUMMARY:Bundled Payments for Oncology: Creating Value-Based Episodes of Care
DESCRIPTION:Aug. 22\, 1-2:30 p.m. ET \nAnnual spending for cancer treatment in the U.S. is set to reach $184 billion by 2020. The large and growing bill has raised concerns that fee-for-service payments for oncology are promoting over-treatment and use of more expensive drugs irrespective of patient benefit. With cancer rates projected to rise steeply in the next two decades\, this is a critical time to improve efficiency and standardize quality in oncology services\, and many see episode-based bundled payments as a promising strategy. \nThis webinar\, developed jointly by NIHCM Foundation and the Center for American Progress\, will cover the following topics: \n\nthe latest cost and quality issues in oncology\, including missed opportunities in care coordination and end-of-life care\nan overview of the framework for episodic payment bundles developed by a consortium of oncologists\, public and private payers\, and patient groups\nthe use of bundled payments in Medicare\, and how CMS might approach reforming payment for oncology services\na health plan collaboration with a leading oncology provider group to develop episodes of care with a focus on improving quality\n\nSpeakers:  \n\nEzekiel Emanuel\, University of Pennsylvania\nPatrick Conway\, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services\nGlenn Pomerantz\, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey\nAndrew Pecora\, Regional Cancer Care Associates\n\nA draft agenda is available. Registration for this free webinar will remain open until 10 a.m. ET on August 22nd.       \n

SUMMARY:Webcast: How value-based insurance design breaks down barriers to care
DESCRIPTION:Watch a recording of this webcast.\nSpeaker’s presentation\n\n\nA. Mark Fendrick\, M.D. \n\n\nResources\n\n\nInsurance: Resources in AHCJ’s core topic area \n\n\nCenter for Value-Based Insurance Design \n\n\n@UM_VBID on Twitter \n\n\nSubscribe to the V-BID e-newsletter \n\n\n\nMark Fendrick\, M.D.\, the director of the Center for Value-Based Insurance Design (VBID) at the University of Michigan\, will explain the principals of VBID and why this strategy is important for consumers. Most health insurers do not use VBID when implementing cost-sharing strategies with consumers. Instead they use what Fendrick calls a “one-size-fits-all approach\,” such as high copayments and high-deductible health plans. \nYet\, these cost-sharing strategies can be a financial barrier to care for low-income patients who have chronic illnesses and thus need access to low-cost medications and medical services. When such financial barriers are reduced\, the result is increased patient compliance with physicians’ recommendations\, Fendrick says. \nDuring the webcast\, Fendrick will explain the concept of VBID and discuss why a bill\, just introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives\, is needed to allow the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to start a VBID demonstration project for members of Medicare Advantage plans. Insurance core topic leader Joe Burns will discuss story ideas and resources for reporting with Fendrick. \n<!– \nNOTE: This is a webcast exclusively for AHCJ members so you will need to have your website username and password. SUMMARY:Network Adequacy: Balancing Cost\, Access and Quality
DESCRIPTION:July 21 at 12:15 p.m. (ET) online and on C-SPAN 3 \nNarrow networks or high-value networks are much in the news lately. Insurers prefer these networks because they allow them to keep costs low. Some patients appreciate the lower premiums that come with such networks\, but other consumers are upset that these networks limit access to some doctors and hospitals. \nThe issue of network adequacy will be discussed during a briefing sponsored by the nonpartisan Alliancefor Health Reform. \nSpeakers include: Katherine Arbuckle\, senior vice president and CFO for Ascension Health\, who will discuss why Ascension participates in some networks but not others; Brian Webb\, manager of health policy and legislation for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners\, who will outline how insurance commissioners view this trend; Paul Ginsburg\, Norman Topping Chair\, Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics at the University of Southern California\, who will explain the implications of narrow networks; and Daniel Durham\, executive vice president for policy and regulatory affairs for America’s Health Insurance Plans. \nOn Twitter\, use #NetworkAdequacy

SUMMARY:The psychology of poverty
DESCRIPTION:How does poverty affect health decisions? Poverty affects every aspect of life and has particularly bad repercussions on human health. The stress of poverty has detrimental effects on the body — and especially the brain. \nScientists have begun to discover that poverty takes its toll on health starting at an early age. Scientists are also making efforts to find the best way to help reverse or eradicate poverty’s health effects. Could education about basic health and nutrition for low-income populations help? Could cash transfers improve some of the health problems that result from poverty? \nTo learn more about psychology of poverty and which interventions work best to thwart the cycle\, join a live online event. Participants include: \nJoe Rojas-Burke (moderator): Independent journalist and author of “The challenge of writing about people in poverty” \nJames Redford: Director of Paper Tigers \nLaura Gottlieb\, M.D.\, M.P.H.: Center for Health and Community at University of California\, San Francisco \nJohannes Haushofer: Postdoctorate at MIT’s Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab \nTeri Barila and Mark Brown: Children’s Resilience Initiative \nDate & time:July 8\, 12 p.m. ET

SUMMARY:Rates of Change: Putting 2015 Insurance Premiums into Context
DESCRIPTION:Rates of Change: Putting 2015 Insurance Premiums into Context will air live on C-SPAN 2 at 12:00 PM ET. \nHealth insurance premiums have been one of the most closely-watched features of the new health insurance marketplaces. In 2014\, insurers set rates based on limited data about who would sign up for coverage. Round II of open enrollment is fast approaching\, allowing little time to process the first year’s data and to prepare for tomorrow. For 2015\, some analysts anticipate increases of 10 percent or less\, while others forecast growth of 20 percent or more. \nWherever these numbers ultimately land\, they are likely to vary from state to state\, with different effects on consumers\, providers\, insurers and the federal budget. This briefing will focus on factors influencing insurance premiums\, state and federal regulatory roles in reviewing rates\, and what to expect in 2015.
