SUMMARY:Public Workshop: Research to Inform Public Health Practices for Ebola
DESCRIPTION:At the request of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)\, the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council will host a one-day workshop to examine possible biomedical and public health research that would best prepare the United States to safeguard the public from the emergence of Ebola. The workshop will provide a venue for real-time discussions about immediate science needs that\, when answered\, will immediately inform HHS\, public health officials\, providers\, and the general public with the most up-to-date and accurate information about virus transmission\, mitigation of health risks\, and appropriate measures to prevent the spread of disease. \n“Our goal for this workshop is to provide a forum for key experts and decision makers to discuss what research is needed and can be performed now to assist the public health response to the occurrence of Ebola in the United States\,” said Institute of Medicine president Victor J. Dzau.  “We want to mobilize the best expertise and offer the best possible advice to the nation and the world community to address this global challenge as it evolves and to prepare for future events.” \nWhile the Ebola virus has typically been studied in laboratory settings\, research on the characteristics and behaviors of the virus under real-world conditions can provide additional evidence-based information to support public health efforts.  Research topics that may be considered during the workshop include routes of virus transmission\, persistence of the virus on various types of surfaces and the ability to transfer viable virus to other locations\, effective methods for viral inactivation and disinfection\, and strategies to protect at-risk responders\, providers\, and the general public\, including the use of personal protective equipment.   Discussions will focus primarily on basic science and public health issues of specific concern to affected and potentially affected communities in the U.S. \nFollowing the event\, a brief written document based on the presentations and discussions held at the workshop will be prepared. No consensus findings or recommendations will be issued. \nEstablished in 1970 under the charter of the National Academy of Sciences\, the Institute of Medicine provides independent\, objective\, evidence-based advice to policymakers\, health professionals\, the private sector\, and the public. The National Research Council is the operating arm of the National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering.  The National Academy of Sciences\, National Academy of Engineering\, Institute of Medicine\, and National Research Council make up the National Academies. \nDate & location: \nNov. 3National Academy of Sciences building2101 Constitution Ave.\, N.W.Washington\, D.C.  \nPlenary sessions and discussions will be available via live video webcast.   \nRegistration information: \nAdvance registration is required. SUMMARY:Fluoridation and your community
DESCRIPTION:Watch a recording of this webcast.\nResources\n\n\nAHCJ Core Topic: Oral Health \n\n\nWater fluoridation: What reporters need to know \n\n\nCampaign for Dental Health (I Like My Teeth) \n\n\n \n\nCommunity water fluoridation has been hailed as one of the public health triumphs of the 20th century. For more than 65 years\, communities across the United States have been supplementing naturally occurring fluoride in water supplies to promote oral health. At what are considered optimum levels\, numerous studies have shown fluoride reduces cavities. At the same time\, critics continue to fight water fluoridation efforts\, armed with papers they say highlight the dangers of fluoride. \nWith battles playing out in communities from Alabama to Oregon\, what do reporters need to know about the science and pseudo-science behind water fluoridation? Our webinar will feature Shelly Gehshan\, director of  children’s dental policy at The Pew Charitable Trusts\, and Mary Otto\, AHCJ’s Oral Health core topic leader.  \nDate & time:2 p.m. ET\, Oct. 16  \n<!– \nNOTE: This is exclusively for AHCJ members; will need your username and password. If you don’t have that\, please email info@healthjournalism.org. A link to the webcast will appear on this page about 15 minutes before it begins. \n–> \nShelly Gehshan (@SGehshan) directs children’s dental policy at Pew\, supervising work with states to expand access to prevention and treatment for children through policy changes in Medicaid\, sealant programs\, community water fluoridation and the dental workforce. She speaks frequently about an expanded dental workforce and the benefits of community water fluoridation. She helped legislators in Minnesota draft the nation’s first state law licensing dental therapists. She served on the Institute of Medicine panel that released a major report in 2011 on the dental access problem. Gehshan spent nearly 20 years working for state policy makers on a range of issues affecting low-income women and children. \nFor technical questions about fluoridation\, contact William Maas\, adviser for the Children’s Dental Policy\, The Pew Charitable Trusts: BMaas-consultant@pewtrusts.org \nMaas is the former director of the Division of Oral Health in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. \n\nShelly Gehshan \n\n\nMary Otto
