SUMMARY:Webinar: An introduction to the microbiome
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, experts will highlight recent efforts involving knowledge developed from study of the preterm infant\, a clean slate upon which a healthy microbiome is developed. They will also examine the impact for oral health as we mature and an industry perspective as it relates to research tools and resources. \nThe human body is host to trillions of microbes\, forming the microbiome that is found on the skin\, in the oral cavity and gut. The microbiota are partially responsible for maintaining a healthy ecological community\, but can also contribute to disease when an imbalance of microbes occurs. \nAs a result of technological advancement in DNA sequencing and reduction in sequencing costs\, the emerging field of metagenomics has fueled research in how microbes across the human body play a role in human health and disease including cancer\, fat malabsorption\, heart disease\, obesity\, diabetes\, and other health concerns. \nThe body’s flora represents a key area of research interest\, as it relates to immunology\, nutrition and digestion\, and other crucial aspects of human health. The recently formed NIH Common Fund Human Microbiome Project has been instrumental in providing research resources that enable the comprehensive characterization of the human microbiota. The webinar will also explore the future of this research. \nPresenters: \n\nCamila R. Martin\, M.D.\, M.S.\, Harvard Medical School\, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center\nFloyd E. Dewhirst\, The Forsyth Institute\nSasha Vlassov\, Thermo Fisher Scientific\n\nModerators: \n\nHoward Young\, Ph.D.\, NCI Laboratory of Experimental Immunology\, NIH Immunology Interest Group\nWinston Kuo\, DMSc\, IES Diagnostics\n\nClick Here for Full Information and Registration. \nDate & time:11 a.m. ET\, Dec. 4

More fun than another Obamacare battle at the Supreme Court\, it’s the 4th annual… AHCJ Washington\, D.C.\, Chapter: Holiday Party! \nYou’re invited to the Association of Health Care Journalists’ D.C. chapter’s Holiday networking gathering! \nCome toast the holiday season with some craft beer from D.C. and Belgium and vintage wine — along with some light food as well. \nNo formal program – just a gathering to tell war stories from 2014 and look forward to another crazy year in 2015. We’ve invited some special guests from government and industry. \nDate & time: \n6 p.m. – 8 p.m.\, Dec. 4. \nLocation: The National Journal offices inside The Watergate at 600 New Hampshire Ave NW. \nAll health journalists are invited. Please RSVP by Dec. 2 to pgalewitz@kff.org. \nThe Details: The Watergate is across the street from the Kennedy Center.  If you walk in the main doors closest to New Hampshire Ave. and turn left\, you will see the elevators. We’ll have someone in the lobby to greet & get people upstairs.  Please plan to arrive no later than 7:15. \nMetro: Foggy Bottom is the closest Metro—about a 7 minute walk. When exiting the station\, walk in the opposite direction of the restaurants (Circa\, Whole Foods)\, and head through the GW campus and toward New Hampshire Ave and make a left. Go down New Hampshire and around the traffic circle in the direction of the Kennedy Center. \nDriving: Are you nuts? The Watergate is accessible by two parking garages\, the Watergate and the Kennedy Center.

SUMMARY:Treatment as Prevention: Can We Treat Our Way Out of the AIDS Epidemic?
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, December 1\, 2014 \n 12:30-1:30pm ET \nWith no cure or vaccine in sight\, HIV/AIDS remains a devastating epidemic\, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where nearly 70% of new HIV infections occur. To curb HIV/AIDS\, researchers have proposed a strategy to use drug treatment to decrease new transmissions so much that the epidemic eventually dies out. The concept requires changes in standards of when anti-retroviral therapy begins and who receives it. Could “treatment as prevention” prove to be the strategy to finally end the AIDS epidemic? \nModerator: Carol Hills\, senior producer and reporter\, PRI’s The World \nExpert Participants \n\nMark Wainberg\, director\, McGill AIDS Centre\, McGill University\nMax Essex\, chairman\, Harvard School of Public Health AIDS Initiative\nKenneth Mayer\, medical research director and co-chair of The Fenway Institute\nShahin Lockman\, associate professor in the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases\, Harvard School of Public Health\n\nWatch the Live Webcast Here on World AIDS Day \nE-mail questions for the expert participants any time before or during the live webcast to theforum@hsph.harvard.edu. SUMMARY:Public Workshop: Research to Inform Public Health Practices for Ebola
DESCRIPTION:At the request of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)\, the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council will host a one-day workshop to examine possible biomedical and public health research that would best prepare the United States to safeguard the public from the emergence of Ebola. The workshop will provide a venue for real-time discussions about immediate science needs that\, when answered\, will immediately inform HHS\, public health officials\, providers\, and the general public with the most up-to-date and accurate information about virus transmission\, mitigation of health risks\, and appropriate measures to prevent the spread of disease. \n“Our goal for this workshop is to provide a forum for key experts and decision makers to discuss what research is needed and can be performed now to assist the public health response to the occurrence of Ebola in the United States\,” said Institute of Medicine president Victor J. Dzau.  “We want to mobilize the best expertise and offer the best possible advice to the nation and the world community to address this global challenge as it evolves and to prepare for future events.” \nWhile the Ebola virus has typically been studied in laboratory settings\, research on the characteristics and behaviors of the virus under real-world conditions can provide additional evidence-based information to support public health efforts.  Research topics that may be considered during the workshop include routes of virus transmission\, persistence of the virus on various types of surfaces and the ability to transfer viable virus to other locations\, effective methods for viral inactivation and disinfection\, and strategies to protect at-risk responders\, providers\, and the general public\, including the use of personal protective equipment.   Discussions will focus primarily on basic science and public health issues of specific concern to affected and potentially affected communities in the U.S. \nFollowing the event\, a brief written document based on the presentations and discussions held at the workshop will be prepared. No consensus findings or recommendations will be issued. \nEstablished in 1970 under the charter of the National Academy of Sciences\, the Institute of Medicine provides independent\, objective\, evidence-based advice to policymakers\, health professionals\, the private sector\, and the public. The National Research Council is the operating arm of the National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering.  The National Academy of Sciences\, National Academy of Engineering\, Institute of Medicine\, and National Research Council make up the National Academies. \nDate & location: \nNov. 3National Academy of Sciences building2101 Constitution Ave.\, N.W.Washington\, D.C.  \nPlenary sessions and discussions will be available via live video webcast.   \nRegistration information: \nAdvance registration is required.
