SUMMARY:Webcast: Race\, criminal justice and health
DESCRIPTION:The focus on racial injustice in the U.S. – particularly the effect of race on criminal justice – has been in the public spotlight following the tragic deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson\, Eric Garner on Staten Island\, and Tamir Rice in Cleveland during encounters with law enforcement. While these inequities play out in numerous areas\, health and well-being is one sector in which minority groups are dramatically and disproportionally affected. \nThis Forum event will examine how disparities within the law and the criminal justice system negatively affect health\, as well as how the role of race interacts with neighborhood environments\, educational and employment opportunities\, public policy\, and other factors to lead to poorer health.      \nE-mail questions for the expert participants before the live webcast to theforum@hsph.harvard.edu. Or Tweet them to@ForumHSPH using #HealthAndRace. We’ll also conduct a live chat on The Forum’s Race\, Criminal Justice and Health web page. The Forum will accommodate as many questions as we can during a limited Q&A. If time does not allow for us to ask your question\, we encourage you to continue the conversation by posting comments on our website at ForumHSPH.org. \nParticipants: \n\nJim Doyle\, Former Wis. governor and former attorney general\, and health care lawyer\, Foley & Lardner LLP\n\n\n\nFelton Earls\, professor of human behavior and development\, emeritus\, Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences\, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health\, and Professor of Social Medicine\, Emeritus\, Harvard Medical School \n\n\nDavid Harris\, managing director\, Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice\, Harvard Law School \n\n\nNancy Krieger\, professor of social epidemiology\, Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences\, Harvard T.H. SUMMARY:Covering Ebola and the next killer contagion
DESCRIPTION:The Association of Health Care Journalists and the Poynter Institute invite journalists from all media\, local and national to apply for this two-day\, in-depth workshop. \n\n\n\nApply now to join leading health care experts and journalists. We will select 20 journalists from around the U.S. to take part in the workshop. A generous grant from The McCormick Foundation will pay participants’ airfare\, tuition and hotel expenses. \n\n\n\nEbola caught the headlines in 2014\, and is still claiming lives in Africa. While that crisis is far from over\, other devastating health concerns loom on the horizon\, many of which barely make headlines. An unusually deadly flu season has been forecast for 2015. Millions of Americans are getting infections that are resistant to traditional antibiotics. Measles is surging. Chikungunya is invading. How well have these been handled by health officials? How about the media? What threats may be ahead in the new year? \n\n\n\nLearn the real threats that so few talk about and find ways to cover them in a clear-eyed and informed way. \n\n\n\nAmong our speakers: \n\n\n\n\nDr. Michael Bell\, deputy director of Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion\, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\n\n\n\nDr. Art Caplan\, head of the Division of Medical Ethics at New York University Langone Medical Center\n\n\n\nJanet St. James\, WFAA-Dallas health reporter\n\n\n\nMike Stobbe of The Associated Press\n\n\n\nScott Hensley of NPR\n\n\n\nDr. Barbara Reynolds\, director of public information\, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\n\n\n\nRobert Logan\, Ph.D.\, communications research scientist and senior staff member at U.S. National Library of Medicine\n\n\n\n\nLocation and times:National Press Club (529 14th Street\, NW\, Washington\, D.C. 20045)The workshop will begin at 9 a.m. on Jan. 21 and end at 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 22. \n\n\n\nCost:Free. The Association of Health Care Journalists (AHCJ) and Poynter will provide tuition\, basic travel expenses\, hotel and most meals. \n\n\n\nApplication Information: \n\n\n\nPoynter has agreed to handle applications. Click here to apply. The application deadline is Dec. 18. \n\n\n\nThere is not much time to apply. Do not delay. We will have many more applications than we can handle so in your application\, give serious thought as to how you would use what you learn in this seminar. Only apply if you are CERTAIN you could attend if we select you. \n\n\n\nWe will hold about a half dozen seats open for D.C. area journalists who do not need airfare or hotels to attend. We seek a rich mix of applications from media\, market size and experience. \n\n\n\nSoon after the seminar\, Poynter’s NewsU will produce an online training session to help those who cannot attend the workshop learn the main lessons from our sessions.

SUMMARY:Briefing: Affordable Care Act
DESCRIPTION:Please join the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Association of Health Care Journalists and the nonpartisan Alliance for Health Reform for a special event on Wednesday\, Jan. 21. \nWith the ACA’s second enrollment period underway\, health plans are increasingly offering consumers networks that exclude certain doctors\, hospitals and other medical providers. Several court cases against insurers are now pending in California. Some claim that these networks hamper provider access and choice; others contend that this approach\, if done the right way\, helps consumers by creating competition and controlling costs\, without compromising quality of care. \nAnne Price of Covered California\, Emily Bazar with the California HealthCare Foundation’s Center for Health Reporting\, Larry Levitt of Kaiser Family Foundation\, and Betsy Imholz of Consumers Union will address this controversial trend and its impact on consumers\, insurers and providers\, and also proposed government intervention. Marilyn Serafini of the Alliance will moderate this briefing. \nDate: Wednesday\, Jan. 21 \nTime: 6:30-8:30 p.m. (refreshments available at 6:30\, program begins at 7 p.m.) \nCost: This event is FREE \nLocation: San Francisco Chronicle (901 Mission St.\, San Francisco) \nRSVP to Colleen Paretty at BayAreaAHCJ@gmail.com \n***Bring photo ID and check in at reception desk. (The Chronicle is near BART\, and parking garages are nearby)  \nWith thanks to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for its support of this event.

SUMMARY:New Institute of Medicine report: Guidelines for Responsible Sharing of Clinical Trial Data
DESCRIPTION:Clinical trials are studies that help determine whether new health interventions – such as drugs\, other therapies\, and vaccines – are safe and effective for patients and the public. Vast amounts of data are generated over the course of a clinical trial; however\, a large portion is never published in peer-reviewed journals. Data sharing can advance new discoveries and improve clinical care\, but at the same time\, sharing clinical trial data presents risks\, burdens\, and challenges\, including protecting the privacy and consent of clinical trial participants. A new report from the Institute of Medicine provides recommended guidelines about what data should be shared at key times in a clinical trial. \nAdvance copies will be available to reporters only beginning at noon EST Tuesday\, Jan. 13. The report is embargoed and not for public release before 1 p.m. EST Wednesday\, Jan. 14. To obtain a copy\, reporters should contact the National Academies’ Office of News and Public Information; tel. 202-334-2138 or e-mail news@nas.edu. \nMembers of the authoring committee will present the report’s findings and recommendations at a public briefing beginning at 1 p.m. EST Wednesday\, Jan. 14\, at the National Academy of Sciences building\, 2101 Constitution Ave.\, N.W.\, Washington\, D.C.   \nThose who cannot attend in person may view a live webcast of the event. \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: An introduction to the microbiome
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, experts will highlight recent efforts involving knowledge developed from study of the preterm infant\, a clean slate upon which a healthy microbiome is developed. They will also examine the impact for oral health as we mature and an industry perspective as it relates to research tools and resources. \nThe human body is host to trillions of microbes\, forming the microbiome that is found on the skin\, in the oral cavity and gut. The microbiota are partially responsible for maintaining a healthy ecological community\, but can also contribute to disease when an imbalance of microbes occurs. \nAs a result of technological advancement in DNA sequencing and reduction in sequencing costs\, the emerging field of metagenomics has fueled research in how microbes across the human body play a role in human health and disease including cancer\, fat malabsorption\, heart disease\, obesity\, diabetes\, and other health concerns. \nThe body’s flora represents a key area of research interest\, as it relates to immunology\, nutrition and digestion\, and other crucial aspects of human health. The recently formed NIH Common Fund Human Microbiome Project has been instrumental in providing research resources that enable the comprehensive characterization of the human microbiota. The webinar will also explore the future of this research. \nPresenters: \n\nCamila R. Martin\, M.D.\, M.S.\, Harvard Medical School\, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center\nFloyd E.
