SUMMARY:National Minority Health Month
DESCRIPTION:Despite recent progress towards ending health disparities\, racial and ethnic minorities continue to face significant health disparities. Throughout the month of April\, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health will partner with state\, local\, federal\, territorial and tribal partners to raise awareness about these ongoing disparities.  \nThe theme for National Minority Health Month 2015 is “30 Years of Advancing Health Equity | The Heckler Report: A Force for Ending Health Disparities in America.” This theme commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Heckler Report\, or the Report of the Secretary’s Task Force on Black and Minority Health\, released in 1985 under the leadership of former HHS Secretary Margaret Heckler. This report marked the first time the U.S. government conducted a comprehensive study of racial and ethnic minority health\, and it elevated minority health to a national stage. \nThis is a great opportunity to focus on covering health disparities\, prevalence of chronic diseases\, caregiving issues and housing. To find out more\, download the logo\, or post events\, visit National Minority Health Month online or contact OMHMedia@hhs.gov. \nDates:April 1 – 30\, 2015

Writing for top publications strengthens your platform and boosts your chances of receiving a prestigious fellowship\, or even a book deal. However\, breaking into top-tier magazines takes an exceptionally good pitch letter. \nIn this webcast\, a panel of editors will explain what they need to see in a top pitch letter. (Hint: you’ll need more than a winning idea.) A great pitch also needs to include the right information about yourself to convince the editor that you have the chops to pull off the story you’re proposing. \nFinally\, the panel will also detail exactly what they expect of writers in one-on-one pitch meetings\, such as AHCJ’s annual Freelance PitchFest.    \nParticipating editors:\nJihan Thompson has covered health for O\, The Oprah Magazine for more than two years. She handles front-of-book wellness stories that range from nutrition pieces to medical trend stories to scientific breakthroughs to first-person narratives\, as well as edits well features on a range of topics. Prior to joining O\, she was an editor at Redbook and Marie Claire magazines. She enjoys running half-marathons and testing out new fitness classes. \nBecky Lang is a senior editor at Discover Magazine\, where she’s worked since early 2013. She moved to the magazine world from newspapers after 11 years as the health/science/environment editor at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. She’s been writing and editing as a job since high school\, where she covered minor league baseball in Helena\, Mont. She’s a graduate of Northwestern University. She loves skiing\, hiking and camping with her 11-year-old son\, and hanging out with their two dogs. \nAnna Miller is a consumer advice reporter at U.S. News & World Report\, where she covers fitness\, nutrition\, mental health and more. She also edits the popular “Eat Run” blog and manages U.S. News Health’s social media accounts. Previously\, she was associate editor of Monitor on Psychology and gradPSYCH magazines\, and has freelanced for The Washington Post and its weekend magazine. Miller earned her master’s degree in interactive journalism from American University in 2014. \nThe webcast will be moderated by Jeanne Erdmann\, an award-winning freelance health and science writer based near St. Louis. Her stories have appeared in Discover\, Women’s Health\, Slate\, Aeon\, The Washington Post\, Nature Medicine\, Nature and many other outlets. She also co-founded and co-produces The Open Notebook\, a craft-focused website for science writers. \n<!– \nHow to participate\nClick here and choose “Guest\,” enter your name and click on “Enter Room.” <!–A link to the webcast will appear on this page about 15 minutes before it begins. SUMMARY:Webinar: The Health Care Revolution No One's Talking About: Changing How We Pay for Care
DESCRIPTION:Health insurers and the federal Medicare program are seeking the best ways to pay providers based on value and performance rather than on the volume of services they deliver. Medicare recently announced a shift that could bend the health care cost curve by moving away from fee-for-service payment. \nHealth economist Austin Frakt of The New York Times’ column The Upshot; Arnold Milstein\, M.D.\, Stanford’s School of Medicine; and Jordan Rau of Kaiser Health News will explain the challenges the federal government faces in trying to slow the rate of growth in health costs. Included in the discussion will be how can journalists find compelling human stories amid these trends. \nThis free webinar is sponsored by USC Annenberg/California Endowment Health Journalism Fellowships and the National Institute for Health Care Management Foundation. \nJournalists can register here. \nDate & time:1 p.m. – 2 p.m.\, March 19\, 2015

SUMMARY:The other part of health reform: Changing the delivery of care
DESCRIPTION:View a recording of this webcast \nSpeaker’s presentation \n\n\nSlides from Patrick Conway(Patrick.Conway@cms.hhs.gov or press@cms.hhs.gov) \n\n\n\nResources\n\n\nAHCJ’s health reform core topic \n\n\nCovering Health blog: Health reform \n\n\nCMS Innovation Center \n\n\nNext Generation ACO Model \n\n\n\n \n\nMarch 10\, 1 p.m. ET\nUPDATE: As part of his remarks\, Patrick Conway\, M.D.\, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services principal deputy administrator\, will discuss a new CMS initiative regarding accountable care organizations that is launching today. Webcast content is embargoed until 2 p.m. Eastern Time. \nReforms to the health care delivery system have been overshadowed by the Affordable Care Act enrollment story. \nThe ACA is more than a way to extend health care coverage to millions of Americans. The 2010 law also takes steps to shift how we deliver health care – to do a better job of managing chronic diseases\, to make hospitals safer\, to move away from fee-for-service\, to get more quality for our health care spending. It’s a big challenge but it doesn’t get as much attention as the coverage aspects of the ACA\, partly because it’s not so politically radioactive. \nThe ACA created the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) to test new ways of delivering care\, to evaluate what works and then to spread the word. CMMI director Patrick Conway\, M.D.\, M.Sc.\, – who was also just named the deputy administrator for CMS – will join AHCJ for a webcast to describe some of what CMMI is doing and share some early results. Conway will talk about accountable care organizations\, medical homes and the recently announced HHS push to speed up the move from fee-for-service to a value-based payment system. Health care providers around the country are taking part in CMMI initiatives and private sector counterparts. There are stories galore to be found. \nThe initiatives in payment and delivery reform have three goals – getting improved quality\, without spending more. Or cutting costs\, but keeping quality intact. Or – the holy grail – improving quality AND reducing cost. \nJoanne Kenen\, AHCJ’s health reform core topic leader\, will lead the discussion and moderate questions and answers from reporters. \nSpeaker\nPatrick Conway\, M.D.\, M.Sc.\, is the deputy administrator for innovation and quality & CMS chief medical officer. He leads the Center for Clinical Standards and Quality and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation at CMS. CCSQ is responsible for all quality measures for CMS\, value-based purchasing programs\, quality improvement programs in all 50 states\, clinical standards and survey and certification of Medicare and Medicaid health care providers across the nation\, and all Medicare coverage decisions for treatments and services. \n<!– \nHw to participate\nA link to the webcast will appear on this page shortly before it begins. \nNOTE: This is exclusively for AHCJ members; you will need to be logged in. If you’re having trouble logging in\, please email info@healthjournalism.org. \nClick here to login as a guest to participate.\n–> \n\nPatrick Conway\, M.D. \n\n\nJoanne Kenen
