As executive director of the nonprofit Health Care Incentives Improvement Institute\, de Brantes has been working with health plans and providers to implement bundled payment programs since 2007.  \nAs we reported recently\, bundled payment initiatives from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services have been criticized for not taking full advantage of this innovative payment model. In the private sector\, however\, health insurers\, hospitals\, and physicians are demonstrating how to fully develop bundled payment programs and make the operational adjustments needed to ensure their long-term success. \nIn this webinar on Wednesday\, Sept. 2\, at 1:30 pm ET\, de Brantes will discuss how providers and payers are getting good results from bundled payment programs and expanding many of these initiatives. \nAbout the speaker \nFrançois de Brantes\, M.S.\, M.B.A.\, is executive director of the Health Care Incentives Improvement Institute (HCI3)\, a not-for-profit company that designs and implements innovative payment and benefit plan design programs. HCI3 works with states\, employers\, health plans and provider organizations\, as well as national consultanciesto advise them on payment and delivery system reform. \nPreviously\, de Brantes was the program leader for various health care initiatives at GE’s corporate headquarters\, responsible for developing and implementing GE’s Active Consumer strategy. \nHe has has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine\, the Journal of the American Medical Association and Health Affairs and is frequently quoted in national media including The New York Times. He has also published two books\, the latest being “The Incentive Cure: The Real Relief For Health Care.” \nJoseph Burns\, AHCJ core topic leader on health insurance\, will moderate the webcast.  \n<!– \nThis is a webcast exclusively for AHCJ members\, so you will need your website username and password. SUMMARY:Racism: The Silent Partner in High School Dropout and Health Disparities
DESCRIPTION:Across the U.S.\, more than 50 million students will attend public elementary and high schools this fall. Yet only two-thirds of African American and less than three-quarters of Latino students will graduate on time. Also\, more than half of all students attending public school live in poverty. \nBarriers to high school graduation are a key public health concern because high school graduation is a leading indicator of healthy adult behaviors and health status. \nAmerican Public Health AssociationPast President Adewale Troutman\, MD\, MPH\, CPH\, former health director for the City of Louisville\, will lead this timely discussion on the significance of high school graduation to health disparities. And Robert Murphy\, former teacher\, assistant principal and dropout prevention specialist for the Maryland Department of Education\, will examine how current policies and practices in educational systems disproportionately impact students of color and ultimately contribute to disproportionate dropout rates. Join public health leaders as they examine their role in providing the leadership to improve high school graduation rates and dismantling the policies and practices that undermine educational success and health. \n\n\nSept. 1\, 2-3 p.m. ET \n\n\nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Making Information Available on Outpatient Surgery in California
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, July 29; Noon-1:30 p.m.\nSheraton Grand\, Gardenia Ballroom 1230 J Street Sacramento\, CA 95814 \nThousands of Californians use outpatient surgery centers for colonoscopies\, arthroscopies\, eye surgeries\, cosmetic and plastic surgeries\, endoscopies\, biopsies\, and other procedures. The CHCF-commissioned research\, which includes a 50-state environmental scan comparing California with other states\, highlights the need for greater transparency and information on outpatient surgical centers. \nAmong the scheduled speakers: \n\n\nYvonne Choong\, senior director\, Center for Medical and Regulatory Policy\, California Medical Association \n\n\nBryce W.A. While the data does not break down enrollment on and off health insurance exchanges for the non-group market (those who do not require subsidies can sign up outside of the exchanges)\, there are steps you can take to estimate these numbers by state. \nReporters on this call will learn more about the carriers in their state’s insurance markets and their claims experience for different product lines. Charles Ornstein\, a senior reporter at ProPublica\, will moderate the webcast. Neil Vance\, a senior actuary with New Jersey’s Department of Human Services\, also will participate. \nHow to participate in the webcast:\nClick here and a new window will open. Choose the option to “Enter as a Guest” and type in your name. Click on the “Enter Room” button. \n<!– \nThis is a webcast exclusively for AHCJ members\, so you will need your website username and password. If you don’t have that you can use the one-click login by entering your email address on file. \nA link to the webcast will appear on this page about 15 minutes before it begins. \n–> \n\nKatherine Hempstead \n\n\nCharles Ornstein

SUMMARY:Health Literacy and Palliative Care
DESCRIPTION:On July 9\, 2015\, the Roundtable on Health Literacy will hold a workshop featuring invited presentations and discussions of the effect of low health literacy on all aspects of palliative care. In general\, low health literacy is a barrier to receiving high quality health care. This is particularly important for people living with serious or chronic illnesses that require complex management regimens and have significant symptoms or treatments with significant side effects. The ability to understand the scope of the illness\, what is necessary to treat the illness\, and how to live with serious illness as comfortably as possible is crucial to patient treatment outcomes and quality of life. \nThe workshop will cover end-of-life and advance illness care models and other areas of interest within palliative care. It will also include the interaction between patients\, families\, and providers\, as well as the knowledge of palliative care and its principles among providers. \nThe meeting will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. \nRegistration to attend the workshop in-person or via webcast is now open.
