SUMMARY:Making Information Available on Outpatient Surgery in California
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, July 29; Noon-1:30 p.m.\nSheraton Grand\, Gardenia Ballroom 1230 J Street Sacramento\, CA 95814 \nThousands of Californians use outpatient surgery centers for colonoscopies\, arthroscopies\, eye surgeries\, cosmetic and plastic surgeries\, endoscopies\, biopsies\, and other procedures. These surgical services have migrated from inpatient to outpatient settings in response to advances in technology\, cost concerns\, and patient preferences. Yet little is known about the costs of these procedures or the quality of care provided in California. \nThe California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF) announces a Sacramento briefing that will review how ambulatory surgery services are regulated; what information is public; and the availability of quality-of-care data\, such as reports of adverse events. The CHCF-commissioned research\, which includes a 50-state environmental scan comparing California with other states\, highlights the need for greater transparency and information on outpatient surgical centers. \nAmong the scheduled speakers: \n\n\nYvonne Choong\, senior director\, Center for Medical and Regulatory Policy\, California Medical Association \n\n\nBryce W.A. Docherty\, KP Public Affairs\, representing the California Ambulatory Surgery Association \n\n\nElizabeth Imholz\, director of special projects\, Consumers Union \n\n\nBrenda G. The briefing is open to all. \nREGISTER NOW to attend online\, in person\, or by phone. \nContact:Danny Sandoval\, CHCFSacramento Office Manager & Program Associate916.329.4542dsandoval@chcf.org \n

SUMMARY:Master your market: Data to cover insurance under the ACA
DESCRIPTION:See the recording of this webcast. \n\nSpeaker’s presentation \n\n\nSlides from Katherine Hempstead(khempstead@rwjf.org\, @khemp64) \n\n\n\nResources\n\nGet the data: Annual Exhibit of Premiums\, Enrollment\, and Utilization\n\nAHCJ’s insurance core topic \n\nAHCJ’s health reform core topic\n\nCovering Health blog: Insurance \n\nCovering Health blog: Health reform\n\nRate filings \n\n\nPlan characteristics for all silver plans \n\n\nData from CMS on Medicare Advantage enrollment and Part D enrollment by plan for every state and every month. This is useful for assessing the impact of mergers. The Wall Street Journal used the data for its analysis. \n\n\n\n \n\nJuly 23\, noon ET\nKatherine Hempstead\, who directs the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s work on health insurance coverage\, will be sharing data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Annual Exhibit on Enrollment\, Premiums\, and Utilization for 2014 that will provide information on insurance carriers in each state – their enrollment\, premiums collected\, claims incurred\, and several measures of utilization\, including hospital admissions and hospital days\, and also physician and non-physician ambulatory care visits. \nThe data offers a level of detail not available from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. It is available for the non-group (individual)\, small group\, and large group markets. While the data does not break down enrollment on and off health insurance exchanges for the non-group market (those who do not require subsidies can sign up outside of the exchanges)\, there are steps you can take to estimate these numbers by state. \nReporters on this call will learn more about the carriers in their state’s insurance markets and their claims experience for different product lines. Charles Ornstein\, a senior reporter at ProPublica\, will moderate the webcast. Neil Vance\, a senior actuary with New Jersey’s Department of Human Services\, also will participate. \nHow to participate in the webcast:\nClick here and a new window will open. Choose the option to “Enter as a Guest” and type in your name. Click on the “Enter Room” button. \n<!– \nThis is a webcast exclusively for AHCJ members\, so you will need your website username and password. SUMMARY:Health Literacy and Palliative Care
DESCRIPTION:On July 9\, 2015\, the Roundtable on Health Literacy will hold a workshop featuring invited presentations and discussions of the effect of low health literacy on all aspects of palliative care. In general\, low health literacy is a barrier to receiving high quality health care. This is particularly important for people living with serious or chronic illnesses that require complex management regimens and have significant symptoms or treatments with significant side effects. The ability to understand the scope of the illness\, what is necessary to treat the illness\, and how to live with serious illness as comfortably as possible is crucial to patient treatment outcomes and quality of life. \nThe workshop will cover end-of-life and advance illness care models and other areas of interest within palliative care. It will also include the interaction between patients\, families\, and providers\, as well as the knowledge of palliative care and its principles among providers. \nThe meeting will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. \nRegistration to attend the workshop in-person or via webcast is now open.

SUMMARY:Medical Cost Trend: Behind the Numbers 2016
DESCRIPTION:JULY 1\, 2015 – noon EDT \nThis free webcast will present findings from the PwC Health Research Institute report on health care spending trends.  \n The report identifies the major trends of the last decade – more consumer cost sharing\, better use of technology\, and more data and incentives to make health decisions – that bring some hope to the goal of a more sustainable health system. At the same time\, 2016 brings new challenges: Does the health industry move to improve margins in a stronger economy or does the industry push harder to slow cost growth and position for a competitive future? \n\n\nPress can register here. \n\n\nDownload the report.
